Interaction of a probe pulse with a 'dressed' Bose—Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases

Abstract

Semiclassical equations describing the interaction of a probe pulse with a 'dressed' Bose—Einstein condensate of a rarefied atomic gas are proposed. The analytic solution of these equations is obtained for low-intensity pulses. The conditions of the appearance of a diffraction grating from recoil atoms are found. The existence of induced superradiance at the probe-beam frequency is predicted. The pulse propagation velocity in the condensate is determined as a function of its energy. The limits of the applicability of the two-level model of a 'dressed' atom are estimated.

Interaction of a laser double beam with the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

A quasi-resonant interaction of two oppositely directed light waves with the Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium vapor is studied using a semiclassical model at higher (dressing) and lower (probe) frequencies. It is demonstrated that, under the experimental conditions, a single state with nonzero momentum that corresponds to the absorption of a dressing photon and the emission of a probe photon is populated. A variation in the experimental conditions, in particular, an increase in the dressing-wave intensity or a decrease in the detuning of its resonance from the electronic transition under study can lead to the excitation of other atomic states whose momenta are codirectional and represent multiples of the given one. The shape of the probe pulse is found for various conditions of its interaction with the dressed condensate.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

Equations of a semiclassical model of superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases are solved numerically taking into account the excitation of atoms by coherent Rayleigh radiation and their recoil in the backward direction. The evolution of the populations of coherent atomic states with a particular momentum is studied, and the pulse shape and the structure of the spectrum of such scattering are found in relation to the laser beam intensity and the recoil kinetic energy of atoms.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of light by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

The superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity light pulses by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rubidium vapor is studied using the model proposed earlier. It is demonstrated that four states with a certain momentum are occupied under the experimental conditions (two states correspond to the forward recoil and two others correspond to the backward recoil). Condensate pulsations between the zero-momentum state and the above states are detected and studied. The corresponding shape of the coherent Rayleigh pulse is found.

Semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate

Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov

A semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering of light from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute atomic gas is proposed. Choosing atomic states with definite values of the momenta as a basis, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Its solutions describe the evolution of the scattered light intensity and of the populations of the coherent atomic states with different recoil momenta.

Semiclassical theory of coherent optical effects in Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute gases

The semiclassical theory of coherent optical effects observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a dilute sodium vapor is proposed. They are superradiant scattering of light from BEC, amplification of the probe light pulse under pumping BEC by more power dressing pulse, amplification (by bosonic stimulation) of coherent atomic waves in BEC (atomic laser), light speed reduction in BEC under electromagnetically induced transparency.

On the theory of coherent effects caused by the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute gases with an electromagnetic field

The Schrödinger equation describing the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate of an ideal gas with an electromagnetic field is derived. Its solutions allow one to find the evolution of the radiation intensity and that of the populations of coherent atomic states with different recoil momenta and can be used for describing such effects as light scattering, light amplification, amplification of atomic beam intensity (an atomic laser), and induced transparency.
