Role of pumping statistics in maser and laser dynamics: Density-matrix approach

János A. Bergou, L. Davidovich, Miguel Orszag +3 more

We discuss in detail the influence that the statistical properties of the pump source have on maser and laser dynamics. We derive a general master equation for the radiation field that is valid for a wide range of different pump mechanisms. If the pump noise is eliminated, we find that the photon number noise in a micromaser and a laser can be significantly reduced below the shot-noise level. In contrast, the phase fluctuations for both maser and laser are unaffected by the noise contribution of the pump.

Failure of an atomic-injection model for the description of pump fluctuations in masers and lasers

Claus Benkert, Kazimierz Rza̧żewski

We analyze and discuss the exact solution of a popular model for the influence of pump statistics on laser and maser fields. This model has attracted some attention in recent years and has been used to describe noise reduction in lasers, masers, and micromasers. We show that this model has some serious problems and can create negative probabilities in the photon-number distribution. We determine the origin of the model's deficiency.

Atomic interference in the micromaser and statistical properties of the micromaser field

Oliver J. Benson, M. Weidinger, Georg A. Raithel +1 more

In this paper we report on atomic interferometry in the micromaser. The atomic inversion is recorded while scanning the cavity frequency across the atomic resonance. For high pump rates, interference patterns are observed on the low-frequency wing of the maser line. The interferences are due to the non-adiabatic mixing of dressed states of the atoms at the entrance and exit holes of the maser cavity, leading to a Ramsey-type two-field interaction. Furthermore, statistical properties of the maser field are investigated via a measurement of the statistics of the pump atoms that leave the maser cavity. Theoretical expressions for the time dependence of the Fano–Mandel parameter Q A(t) are compared with the experimental data. We demonstrate, that metastability of the maser field and atomic interference strongly influence the approach to a steady-state value of Q A(t).
