GENERALIZED GUTZWILLER ANSATZ FOR THE HALF-FILLED HUBBARD CHAIN

Abstract

The well-known Gutzwiller wave function is generalized by including new variational parameters to control nearest-neighbour charge-charge, charge-spin, and spin-spin correlations. The non-magnetic state of the one-dimensional, half-filled Hubbard model is studied. Within the Gutzwiller approximation, the expression for the ground state energy can be worked out analytically. The correlation between empty and doubly occupied sites is found to play the most essential role. Minimization in the large-U limit shows that the Brinkman-Rice transition has been pushed to U → ∞, and the leading term of the ground state energy density is of order −t2/ U . In contrast to results obtained with the Gutzwiller wave function, we find that the band occupation number nk is monotonically decreasing both above and below kF. The dominant k–dependence is given by ~(t/U) cos k, in agreement with t/U–expansion results. nk has also a weak step-function component, with the discontinuity at kF vanishing as (t/U)2 in the limit U/t ≫ 1.

Variational Studies of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

P. Fazekas

Generalized Gutzwiller-type trial ground states for the Hubbard model are considered, which include extra variational parameters to control the nearest-neighbour charge-charge, charge-spin, and spin-spin correlations. The correlation between doubly occupied and empty sites is found to be particularly important. The results for the large- U regime show qualitative improvement when compared to the predictions of the simple Gutzwiller Ansatz: We get the correct order of magnitude for the energy density, and the band state occupation number is found to be a monotonically decreasing function, with the leading term corresponding to that of the t/U -expansion. We find that to get the small- U limit right, the pair-correlated Ansatz has to be used in conjunction with a cluster Gutzwiller approximation, and introduce a four-site cluster approximation which gives promising results. We argue that small-cluster Gutzwiller approximations get accurate in the limit of large lattice dimensionality.

Variational Monte Carlo Studies of the Hubbard Model in One- and Two-Dimensions –Off-Diagonal Intersite Correlation Effects–

Hiromi Otsuka

We investigate the ground state properties of the one- and the two-dimensional Hubbard models using a new variational Monte Carlo method. By generalizing the Gutzwiller variational wave function (GF) to take into account an off-diagonal intersite correlation, we examine the metal-insulator transition mechanism at the half filling. As Kaplan et al. first pointed out, the binding mechanism between doubly occupied sites and empty sites plays a crucial role for this transition; we confirm this by examining the real space correlation function between these two kinds of sites. Results for the spin and the charge structure factors are presented as well as the momentum distribution function and are discussed in connection with the pairing effect. We also find that in less-than half filling, the improvements of the structure factors at 2 k F are realized as compared with GF results.

Analytic calculation of ground-state properties of correlated fermions with the Gutzwiller wave function

Walter Metzner, D. Vollhardt

A new analytic approach to the evaluation of ground-state properties of Hubbard-type models in terms of the Gutzwiller variational wave function is presented. It is based on the observation that expectation values in terms of this wave function may be expressed by sums over different lattice sites. This makes the application of Wick's theorem and the resulting contractions extremely simple, since the latter involve only anticommuting numbers as in a Grassmann algebra. Expressions for the momentum distribution ${n}_{\mathrm{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ and the Hubbard interaction in terms of a power series in a particular correlation parameter are derived which are valid for all dimensions. An explicit diagrammatic evaluation of the coefficients is described. In one dimension these coefficients may be determined to all orders which yields an approximation-free calculation of ${n}_{\mathrm{k}}$ and ground-state energy E for arbitrary density n and interaction strength U. In the case of a half-filled band and large U, hitherto unexpected nonanalyticities are found. The results allow for the first approximation-free assessment of the properties of the Gutzwiller wave function. It is shown that the well-known Gutzwiller approximation may be derived diagrammatically, too. The approximation is seen to yield the exact results for expectation values in terms of this wave function in the limit of infinite dimensionality.

Phase transitions and exact ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Chia‐Wei Yang, ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN, Y. L. Chiang

The exact phase diagrams of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, both attractive and repulsive, in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field h for various electron concentrations n and on-site interaction strengths U <0 or U >0 are calculated and investigated. The exact ground-state properties, namely, the ground-state energy, the average spin (magnetization), the concentration of the doubly occupied sites, the kinetic energy, the chemical potential, the spin (magnetic) susceptibility and the charge compressibility, are calculated and examined over a wide range of interaction strengths U for various h and n . It is found that the spin susceptibility at half-filling is non-analytic and changes discontinuously as U →0. The exact theory shows the absence of a charge energy gap in the U ⩽0 region for all n and provides, for the chemical potential, the rigorous upper and lower bounds for half-filled and empty bands respectively. The analytical results derived for the weak-coupling limit and asymptotic expansions for strong coupling are in full agreement with the numerical calculations.

Exact analytic results for the Gutzwiller wave function with finite magnetization

Marcus Kollar, D. Vollhardt

We present analytic results for ground-state properties of Hubbard-type models in terms of the Gutzwiller variational wave function with nonzero values of the magnetization m. In dimension $D=1$ approximation-free evaluations are made possible by appropriate canonical transformations and an analysis of umklapp processes. We calculate the double occupation and the momentum distribution, as well as its discontinuity at the Fermi surface, for arbitrary values of the interaction parameter g, density n, and magnetization m. These quantities determine the expectation value of the one-dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian for any symmetric, monotonically increasing dispersion ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{k}.$ In particular for nearest-neighbor hopping and densities away from half filling the Gutzwiller wave function is found to predict ferromagnetic behavior for sufficiently large interaction U.

Gutzwiller wave functions for correlated electrons: theory and applications

Florian Gebhard

This work covers three lectures on Gutzwiller wave functions for correlated electron systems. In the first lecture, some basic ideas on model Hamiltonians and their motivation are outlined, Gutzwiller's variational approach to Landau Fermi-liquid theory is sketched, and, as a first application, the theory is applied to the one-band Hubbard model where the Brinkman–Rice metal-to-insulator transition is found. The second lecture is devoted to the perturbative calculation of expectation values. In this rather technical part the variational analog of Wick's theorem, Feynman diagrams, and the linked-cluster theorem are introduced. The important differences between the variational approach and the standard Green function technique are the absence of a time-dependence and the flexibility to select the expansion parameter of the variational perturbation theory. When this flexibility is used appropriately, not a single self-energy diagram must be calculated in the limit of large dimensions, i.e. in the limit of large lattice coordination number the expectation values can be evaluated exactly for general Hubbard-type models for all interaction strengths and band fillings. The third lecture covers the application of the theory to ferromagnetism of nickel. After a discussion of the nickel problem, multi-band Hubbard models and Gutzwiller wave functions are introduced and parameterized. The favourable comparison between the results from Gutzwiller theory and a large number of experiments shows that correlations play an important role in itinerant ferromagnets.
