Abstract

We have measured the two-photon autocorrelation function of ultrashort CO2 laser pulses generated by optical free induction decay. The pulse duration was determined as a function of the pressure in the resonant absorber. At a pressure of 250-Torr 30-psec optical pulses were produced.

Short CO2 laser pulse generation by optical free induction decay

Eli Yablonovitch, J. Goldhar

Short CO2 laser pulses, adjustable in the range between 0.1 and 0.5 nsec, have been produced by a new pulse-shaping technique. A laser breakdown spark is the active switching element, but the pulse is actually generated by optical free induction decay in a passive linear medium. This approach features simplicity, fast rise time, high contrast ratio, unity switching efficiency, and is suitable as the input to high-power amplifier stages.

We generate continuously wavelength-tuneable truncated laser pulses with a high pressure (11 bar) single-mode 10µ,m CO2-laser and a plasma shutter and applied them in an optical-free-induction- decay (OFID) system.

First optical-free-induction-decay system with a tunable single-mode high-pressure CO2 laser

Joachim Knittel, Damien P. Scherrer, Fritz Kurt Kneubühl

We generate continuously wavelength-tunable truncated laser pulses with a high-pressure (11 bar) single-mode 10 micrometers CO2 laser and a plasma shutter and applied them to an optical-free-induction-decay (OFID) system. Single- mode operation is achieved using a 3-mirror resonator with etalon. A detailed analysis of this resonator type is presented.

New concept of optical-free-induction-decay (ofid) picosecond-pulse 10 um-CO2-laser systems

Damien P. Scherrer

We report first operation of ps-pulse 10 µm-CO2-laser systems based on optical free induction decay (OFID) in far-infrared-laser gases, e.g. CH3F, D20, NH3, instead of the usual hot CO2- gas. This implies new phenomena. Main advantages are wavelength selectivity and compactness.

Generation of a short pulse by optical free induction decay (OFID) using the rising edge of a TEA CO/sub 2/ laser pulse for excitation

C.R. Rodrigues, S. M. Mahajan, Carl A. Ventrice

The generation of short CO/sub 2/ laser pulses is achieved in several ways such as the optical free induction decay (OFID) technique. The OFID technique is a relatively simpler mechanism of generating short pulses and easily invites further study of the technique. The present work involves the interaction of the rising edge of a pulsed CO/sub 2/ laser with ammonia and Dymel in an effort to generate an OFID pulse.
