Abstract

The interaction of two bright matter solitons in two-component repulsive Bose–Einstein condensates with interspecies attraction is investigated using the variational approach. The effective interaction potential of the two solitons is obtained. It is shown that the interaction between the two solitons is a short-range attractive force. The relative motion of the two solitons and the oscillating angular frequency are also obtained.

Bright solitons in coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates supported by interspecies attraction

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We demonstrate the formation of bright solitons in coupled defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation supported by attractive coupling. As an application we use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field model to study the formation of stable bright solitons in two-component repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) supported by interspecies attraction in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. When all interactions are repulsive, there cannot be bright solitons. However, bright solitons can be formed in two-component repulsive BECs for a sufficiently attractive interspecies interaction, which induces an attractive effective interaction among bosons of same type.

Effective potential of two coupled binary matter wave bright solitons with spatially modulated nonlinearity

Yongshan Cheng

The interaction of two coupled binary matter wave bright solitons is investigated by means of the variational approach in the presence of spatially varying nonlinearity. The effective potential characterizing the interaction between the two solitons is obtained. It is shown that the effective potential is composed of three parts, related to the spatially modulated nonlinearity, the external trapping potential and the interaction of the two coupled solitons. The spatially modulated nonlinearity induces a pseudo-potential and the solitons can be accelerated by the spatially modulated nonlinearity. The effect depends on the sign and value of the spatially modulated coefficient. The interaction of two coupled binary matter wave bright solitons is of short range, and may be attractive or repulsive depending on the sign of the interspecies interactions. Under the appropriate condition, the two coupled solitons can evolve stably and do not coalesce. The neighbouring binary Bose-Einstein condensates are also available as media to create symbiotic bright solitons. The validity of the theoretical predictions is verified by the numerical integration of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Bright matter wave solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates

Kevin E. Strecker, Guthrie B. Partridge, Andrew G. Truscott +1 more

We review recent experimental and theoretical work on the creation of bright matter wave solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates. In two recent experiments, solitons are formed from Bose–Einstein condensates of 7 Li by utilizing a Feshbach resonance to switch from repulsive to attractive interactions. The solitons are made to propagate in a one-dimensional potential formed by a focused laser beam. For repulsive interactions, the wavepacket undergoes dispersive wavepacket spreading, while for attractive interactions, localized solitons are formed. In our experiment, a multi-soliton train containing up to ten solitons is observed to propagate without spreading for a duration of 2 s. Adjacent solitons are found to interact repulsively, in agreement with a calculation based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation assuming that the soliton train is formed with an alternating phase structure. The origin of this phase structure is not entirely clear.

Dynamics of dark-bright vector solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

M. O. D. Alotaibi, Lincoln D. Carr

We analyze the dynamics of two-component vector solitons, namely, dark-bright solitons, via the variational approximation in Bose-Einstein condensates. The system is described by a vector nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation appropriate to multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates. The variational approximation is based on a hyperbolic tangent (hyperbolic secant) for the dark (bright) component, which leads to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations for the evolution of the ansatz parameters. We obtain the oscillation dynamics of two-component dark-bright solitons. Analytical calculations are performed for same-width components in the vector soliton, and numerical calculations extend the results to arbitrary widths. We calculate the binding energy of the system and find it to be proportional to the intercomponent coupling interaction and numerically demonstrate the breakup or unbinding of a dark-bright soliton. Our calculations explore observable eigenmodes, namely, the internal oscillation eigenmode and the Goldstone eigenmode. We find analytically that the number of atoms in the bright component is required to be less than the number of atoms displaced by the dark soliton in the other component in order to find the internal oscillation eigenmode of the vector soliton and support the existence of the dark-bright soliton. This outcome is confirmed by numerical results. Numerically, we find that the oscillation frequency is amplitude independent. For dark-bright solitons in $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ we find that the oscillation frequency range is 90 to 405 Hz and therefore observable in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensate experiments.

Reflection-Transmission Transition of Bright-Bright Solitons Collision in Two Species Condensates with Repulsive Interspecies Interactions

Zhang-Ming He, Dong-Long Wang, Jian-Wen Ding +1 more

Considering repulsive interspecies interactions, we study the dynamical properties of bright-bright solitons in two species Bose—Einstein condensates by using a variational approach combined with numerical simulation. It is shown that the interactions between bright-bright solitons vary from repulsive to attractive interactions with the increasing their separating distances, and at equilibrium position the bright-bright solitons are localized. Interestingly, a transition from reflection- to transmission-collision is firstly observed, different from previous results of only reflection collision appearing there. These results will be helpful for the experimental manipulating such solitons.

Multiple dark-bright solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

D. Yan, JiaJia Chang, Chris Hamner +6 more

Motivated by recent experimental results, we present a systematic theoretical analysis of dark-bright-soliton interactions and multiple-dark-bright-soliton complexes in atomic two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We study analytically the interactions between two dark-bright solitons in a homogeneous condensate and then extend our considerations to the presence of the trap. We illustrate the existence of robust stationary dark-bright-soliton ``molecules,'' composed of two or more solitons, which are formed due to the competition of the interaction forces between the dark- and bright-soliton components and the trap force. Our analysis is based on an effective equation of motion, derived for the distance between two dark-bright solitons. This equation provides equilibrium positions and characteristic oscillation frequencies of the solitons, which are found to be in good agreement with the eigenfrequencies of the anomalous modes of the system.
