High-energy resonant cross sections for simultaneous electron-photon excitation of the 3s state of hydrogen

Abstract

High-energy cross sections for the excitation of the 3s state of the hydrogen atom by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons are calculated under the second-order Bethe-Born approximation, both as functions of electron energy and of laser intensity. Resonant structures are shown to arise as a function of laser-photon frequency. The behaviour of these resonances is described and their origin explained. It is concluded that these resonances are characteristic of the simultaneous electron-photon excitation process itself and can occur for any atomic target, under suitable conditions.

Excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons

N. K. Rahman, Farhad H. M. Faisal

Cross sections for excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons are calculated with the Bethe-Born approximation. The resulting second-order matrix element is calculated exactly with an analytic Coulomb Green's function. The cross sections are shown to be of direct physical interest with present-day lasers.

Two-photon laser-assisted electron scattering on Hydrogen atom

A. S. Kornev, B. A. Zon

Synopsis We considered the influence of light-dressed-atom effect on two-photon laser-assisted electron-atom scattering in the Born approximation. We performed calculations for the ground state of a Hydrogen atom. For small scattering angles, the main contribution to the cross section is made by the combined process, when one of the photons is absorbed by the atomic electron and the second one by the scattered electron. However, in the UV region, when two-photon resonances with highly excited atomic states arise, the main contribution is determined by the inverse polarization Bremsstrahlung absorption.

Electron-impact excitation of a metastable hydrogen atom in the presence of a resonant laser field

S. P. Purohit, K. C. Mathur

Electron-impact excitation of the hydrogen metastable 2s state to the 3s, 4s, 3d, and 4d states is studied in the presence of a resonant laser field using the rotating-wave approximation. The frequency of the circularly polarized laser field is chosen to match the 2s-3p transition frequency in the hydrogen atom. The role of the laser field in individual magnetic substate (${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{f}}$=0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2) excitation is analyzed. It is found that for these optically forbidden transitions (s-s, s-d), a significant increase in the excitation cross sections is obtained through joint collisions with electrons and photons.

Joint collision of electrons and photons with hydrogen atoms

K. C. Mathur

Ab initio perturbation theory calculations for the excitation of then = 2state of a hydrogen atom by electron impact in the presence of a near resonant electromagnetic field are presented. Single photon near-resonance process is discussed. A significant increase in the excitation cross section for the atom is obtained by joint collisions with electrons and photons.

Electron-impact excitation of atoms in the presence of a nearly resonant laser field

P. Francken, C. J. Joachain

We have studied the electron-impact excitation of an atom, in the presence of a laser field whose photon energy is tuned close to the energy difference between two excited final states. Both the laser-projectile and the laser-target interactions are treated nonperturbatively, while the electron-atom interaction is treated within the first Born approximation. As an application, we have analyzed the resonant laser-assisted excitation of the ${2}^{1}$S and ${2}^{1}$P states of helium. The agreement between the present nonperturbative results and previous perturbative ones is excellent, except for very small detunings. The present nonperturbative treatment also shows that the results given by perturbation theory on both sides of the resonance, when plotted as a function of the laser frequency, correspond to the excitation of different Floquet pseudostates. This is related to the presence of avoided crossings in the diagram of the Floquet pseudoenergies, as a function of the laser frequency.
