Light pulse amplification in a single-mode fiber waveguide containing resonant impurities

Andrei I. Maimistov

Light pulse amplification in a fiber amplifier is analyzed using a two-level model of resonant impurity atoms in a preinverted state. A steady-state ultrashort pulse propagating in such an amplifier is predicted. The dispersion broadening of this pulse is compensated by a nonlinear compression due to self-interaction, whereas an increase in the amplitude is compensated by linear losses. The dependence of the total energy of a transient pulse on the fiber wavelength is determined and a study is made of the role of the spatial inhomogeneity of the population inversion of the impurity atoms. Quasicoherent amplification is discussed.

Raman amplification of ultrashort light pulses in inhomogeneously broadened three-level systems

V. V. Kozlov, Elena V. Kozlova

In the limit of pulse durations that are shorter than the characteristic times of atomic decays, the dynamics of the propagation of a probe light pulse under the action of a driving pulse in the form of a self-induced transparency soliton applied to the adjacent transition of the V -scheme is considered. For a three-level absorber, it is shown that, in the absence of two-photon inhomogeneous broadening, the effect of soliton-induced transparency (SOIT) for the probe field takes place, which consists of the probe pulse undergoing forced localization by the driving pulse and propagates further without a change in the energy or shape. This type of transparency has no threshold with respect to both the energy and the area and is observed for arbitrarily weak pulses. The SOIT effect disappears in the presence of a two-photon inhomogeneous broad-ening. The effect of Raman amplification in a three-level amplifier with the Raman population inversion is considered. It is demonstrated that, under the action of the two-photon inhomogeneous broadening, the effect of Raman amplification becomes a threshold effect. The broader the two-photon inhomogeneous contour, the larger the Raman inversion required to initiate generation.

Efficient excitation of media for laser isotope separation

S. K. Borisov, Marina A. Kuzmina, В. А. Мишин

A theoretical investigation is made of the photoionisation of a three-level medium intended for laser isotope separation. The results show that the highest ionisation efficiency can be achieved by dividing the process into two stages: coherent population inversion and photoionisation. A study is made of the possibility of inversion of three-level systems for various detunings of the laser frequencies from the radiative transition frequencies. It is shown that there are detunings for which the population of the third level is maximal for any a priori selected parameters of the medium and field. Such detunings lie near a two-photon resonance and depend on the energy density and duration of the laser pulses, and also on the dipole moments of the transitions. The suitability of this method in the case of inhomogeneously broadened optically dense media is considered. It is shown that the method is most efficient in the case of counterpropagating laser pulses. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated for ytterbium.
