Self-induced transparency on the 1.15-μm line of neon

W. Krieger, P. E. Toschek

Self-induced transparency in an absorbing neon discharge has been observed on the nonresonance transition $2{s}_{2}(J=1)\ensuremath{-}2{p}_{4}(J=2)$. Since linearly polarized light pulses excite two dipole moments differing by only 18%, the absorber is virtually nondegenerate and superior in simplicity to molecular absorbers. Light pulses, generated from the output of a cw single-frequency 1.15-\ensuremath{\mu}m He-Ne laser oscillator by a pulsed Ne laser amplifier, were transmitted through the absorber. Comparison of the oscilloscope traces of input and output pulses indicated the occurrence of pulse retardation, peak amplification, and pulse breakup. Complete pulse reshaping to the predicted hyperbolic-secant envelope has been observed. The periodicity of transmission versus pulse power, which provides direct evidence of optical nutation, is in agreement with the results of a pulse-area-pulse-energy model.

Experimental study of self-induced transparency mode-locking in Ti:sapphire laser

Mikhail V. Arkhipov, Rostislav M. Arkhipov, A. A. Shimko +2 more

Abstract In this paper, passive mode-locking in Ti:sapphire laser with a coherent absorber cells with rubidium vapor placed in the cavity is demonstrated experimentally. For the best of our knowledge these experiments are the first time experimental demonstration of passive mode-locking based on self-induced transparency regime in the coherent absorber. Up to now, such a regime has not been observed experimentally and was predicted only theoretically.

Self-Induced Transparency in Resonant Medium.

Hidetoshi Nakano, Yuzo Ishida

Self-induced transparency (SIT) is a kind of coherent transient phenomena in two-level atomic system. The optical pulse with an area that is an integer multiple of 2π, which causes SIT in an absorber, is stable and a kind of soliton. Thus SIT is expected to be useful in pulse compression and pulse shaping. In this paper, we discuss some problems in experiments of SIT and surveys the experimental results of SIT. It is also described the recent experimental results of coherent nonlinear pulse propagation in BiI3 crystal using tunable sub-picosecond pulses.
