Extracting nonlocal interpolaron interactions from collisional dynamics

Junichi Takahashi, Hiroyuki Tajima, Eiji Nakano +1 more

This study develops an experimental method of deducing the profile of interaction induced between impurities in a trapped gas of ultracold Fermi or Bose atoms, which are often referred to as Fermi or Bose polarons. In this method, we consider a two-body Fermi or Bose polaron collision experiment in which impurities and atoms interact only weakly. Numerical simulations of the quantum dynamics reveal the possibility to obtain information regarding the nonlocal-induced interaction between two polarons from a measured profile of the polaron wave packet at several snapshots. This is because the potential of the induced interaction is well balanced by the quantum potential whenever the WKB approximation for the relevant Schr\"odinger equation is applicable.

Calculation of excited polaron states in the Holstein model

O. S. Barišić

An exact-diagonalization technique is used to investigate the low-lying excited polaron states in the Holstein model for the infinite one-dimensional lattice. For moderate values of the adiabatic ratio, a comprehensive picture, involving three excited (coherent) polaron bands below the phonon threshold, is obtained. The coherent contribution of the excited states to both the single-electron spectral density and the optical conductivity is evaluated and, due to the invariance of the Hamiltonian under the space inversion, the two are shown to contain complementary information about the single-electron system at zero temperature. The chosen method reveals the connection between the excited bands and the renormalized local phonon excitations of the adiabatic theory, as well as the regime of parameters for which the electron self-energy has notable nonlocal contributions. Finally, it is shown that the hybridization of two polaron states allows a simple description of the ground and first excited states in the crossover regime.

Coupled dynamics of polaron and Bose–Einstein condensate in a parabolic potential

Sh. Mardonov, Eugene Ya. Sherman

Abstract We study various regimes of coherent coupled motion of a polaron and one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate in a harmonic potential. By using qualitative analysis, perturbation theory and direct numerical solution of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we show that the entire dynamics is strongly nonlinear and critically depends on the sign of the self-interaction in the condensate and the sign of the interaction between the polaron-forming embedded particle and the condensate. Strongly mutually related evolution of the condensate shape, its center of mass position, and polaron coordinate is studied for coupled nonlinear polaron-condensate oscillations and transmission/reflection of the polaron through/by the condensate.
