The rational values beta = 5 / 16 , delta =5, alpha = 1 / 8 , nu = 5 / 8 , and eta =0 of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional spin 1 / 2 Ising ferromagnet are shown to be consistent with a recently-derived linearised equation for the Ising two-spin correlation function. This equation arises from an exact integral representation which previously, on application of a straightforward approximation for higher-order cumulant averages, was shown to yield transition temperatures T c to within 2% of their correct values for the cubic lattices. In the search for beta , the requirement is imposed that the correction terms for the magnetisation and for M 2 , a quantity closely related to the system internal energy, be analytic in some power of T c -T (which turns out to be 1 / 8 ) when the external magnetic field h is zero.

For pt. II, see abstr. A64455 of 1973. The critical-point exponents of two Ising models with pure three-spin coupling terms are examined using low-temperature (T<T c ) series expansions for the thermodynamic functions. In particular the critical isotherm exponent delta is examined by applying numerical extrapolation methods to the critical isotherm. The two models are (a) a two-dimensional triangular lattice and (b) a three-dimensional face-centred cubic lattice. Direct numerical estimates of alpha ', beta and delta for (b) show that the scaling relations hold for this model and it is found that alpha '=0.655, beta =0.0538, gamma =1.24, nu =0.448, eta =-0.76, and delta =24 on the basis of the scaling relations. The numerical accuracy of the exponents beta and delta for model (a) does not permit an independent verification of the scaling relations; assuming scaling to hold here also, and using the exact result alpha '= 2 / 3 obtained by Baxter and Wu, it is found that gamma '=1.187+or-0.006, nu = 2 / 3 , eta =0.219+or-0.009, beta =0.073+or-0.003, and delta =17.3+or-0.8.
An infinite set of coupled integral equations is found, with the use of a spectral theorem for the correlation functions of the spin-1/2 three-dimensional Ising model. The second equation is linearised to yield the two spin correlation function. The Ward identity is then satisfied. Those approximations which give the Weiss and spherical model results are indicated. The transition temperature is calculated for SC, BCC and FCC lattices using a product average decomposition of the higher-order correlation functions. The scheme is seen to converge toward the respective values 0.738, 0.789 and 0.823 of 4/ beta c J(0) which are within 2% of the exact values 0.752, 0.794 and 0.816.
A pair-correlation function ansatz, previously used in the derivation of the Ising model critical exponent η for the square lattice from a criticality equation within the i-δ approximation, is investigated further. Various methods are used to calculate the multispin correlation functions entering the criticality equation. The calculations are extended to the three-dimensional cubic lattices. It is found that the values obtained for η are relatively insensitive to the specific method used. In two dimensions, η takes the values 0.2506 (i-δ method), 0.2471, and 0.2490 (renormalized Hamiltonian methods), thereby remaining within 1.2% of the exact value 1/4. In three dimensions, η ranges from 0.030 to 0.075, being of the same order of magnitude as the series value 0.041 ± 0.01.
New relations, the 'i- delta relations', are presented for the evaluation of higher-order critical correlation functions for the three-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model. The critical temperatures Tc for the cubic lattices are then calculated and are found to be within 1/2% of the results of series analysis. Monte Carlo calculations are performed on the simple cubic lattice, and are found to bear out the theoretical predictions for the correlation functions to within 1.3%, for the basic Tc-determining equations to within 0.5%, and for the i- delta relations to within 2.5%. An earlier theory, which uses the critical correlation function approximation, is critically examined both theoretically and by comparison with the Monte Carlo results.
Simple but rigorous derivations are presented for the inequalities2−η≤dγ′/(2β+γ′)≤dγ′/(2−α′),2−η≤d(δ−1)/(δ+1),γ≤(2−η)ν.(Proofs of the first two inequalities have been given by Buckingham and Gunton.1) Here d is the dimensionality and α′, β, γ, γ′ and δ are the exponents characterizing a ferromagnet near its critical point,2 while η and ν describe the decay of the corresponding spin-spin correlation functions2 Γ2(r)=〈S0zSrz〉, according to ∑ |r|<RΓ2(r)∼R2−η(T=Tc,H=0,R→∞),κ1∼(T−Tc)ν,(T→Tc,H=0),where the inverse range of correlation κ1 may be defined by κ1−2=[Σrr2Γ2(r)]/[ΣrΓ2(r)]. The corresponding exponent ηE for the energy-energy correlation function (essentially Γ4(r, a)−[Γ(a)]2, where Γ4(r, a)=〈S0zSazSrzSr+az〉) is proved to satisfy 2−ηE≤dα′,2−ηE≤dαc/(1+ζ+αc),where the specific heat CM at T=Tc diverges with the magnetization as M−αc while the energy derivative | ∂U/∂M |Tc varies as Mζ. (Mean Field or classical values are αc=0, ζ=1.) The proofs are based on the ``intuitively obvious'' properties: (a) positivity, namely, Γ1=〈S0z〉≥0,Γ(r)−Γ12≥0,Γ4(r, a)−[Γ2(a)]2≥0, and (b) monotonic increase of Γ1, Γ2 and Γ4 under increase of magnetic field and decrease of temperature. These properties are known3 to be rigorously valid for Ising models of arbitrary spin, lattice structure and ferromagnetic coupling (Jij≥0). Their validity for real magnets together with the experimental observation δ≤4.7 leads to the significant conclusion η≥0.05.
A set of coupled integral equations for the correlation functions of the 3-D Ising ferromagnet is generalised to the case of a ferromagnet with the additional feature that beside the conventional two-spin interaction terms (J 2 S i z S j z ) it contains four-spin interaction terms (J 4 S i z S j z S k z S l z ) in its Hamiltonian. The second equation is linearised yielding the two-spin correlation function which is found to be the same as the two-spin correlation function for the pure two-spin interaction ferromagnet. The Ward identity is shown to be satisfied. The approximations which reproduce the Weiss and spherical results in a generalised form are indicated. Using a generalised non-uniform magnetic field method, a relation between the transition temperature for the combined two- and four-spin interaction ferromagnet and the transition temperature for the pure two-spin interaction is derived.
