Abstract

We report on measurements of dc electron transport and microwave dynamics of thin film hybrid Josephson junctions with an oxide antiferromagnetic interlayer. The base superconducting electrode YBaCuO and the antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer CaSrCuO (with thickness d = 20 – 70 nm) were grown by laser ablation on NdGaO 3 substrates. I-V curves were well fitted to RSJ model and had no excess current, I C R N products were of order 0.2 mV at T =4.2 K. We did not observe any noticeable reduction of I C R N with increasing d . Such "tunnellike" behaviour also resulted in appearance of singularities on I-V curve when magnetic field was applied. Oscillating with microwave power integer and half-integer Shapiro steps were registered along with sub-harmonic detector response. Moreover, for some of junctions a "devil" staircase structure was observed on I-V curves and giant noise-like signals were measured in 1-2 GHz band at the certain levels of microwave power. Observed features, noise performance and the impact of the second harmonic in current-phase relation on junction dynamics are discussed taking into account data for structures without AF interlayer.

Dynamics of underdamped Josephson junctions with nonsinusoidal current-phase relation

Victor K. Kornev, T. Yu. Karminskaya, Yu. V. Kislinskiĭ +3 more

Results on analytical and computational investigations of high frequency dynamics of Josephson junctions, characterized by nonzero capacitance and the second harmonic in the current-phase relation are presented. These attributes each influence on behaviour of integer Shapiro steps and lead to formation of non-integer Shapiro steps. Analytic theory of the integer and non-integer Shapiro steps has been developed for so-called high frequency limit. The analytical and numerical results are compared with experimental data for hybrid heterostructures YBCO/Au/Nb. Detector response for the case of high fluctuation level has been considered as well.

Excess noise in thin film grain boundary Josephson junctions and devices

L Hao, J.C. Macfarlane, Colin M. Pegrum

The subject of electronic noise in high- superconducting Josephson devices and in their applications is considered. Several types of grain boundary junctions, prepared in different ways by four separate international laboratories, are fully characterized in terms of their electrical and noise properties at a range of temperatures, frequencies, magnetic fields and in the presence of microwaves. Similar characterization is carried out for multijunction Josephson flux-flow arrays, and bi-epitaxial SQUIDs. The theory of Likharev and Semenov for thermal noise in low- junctions is adopted as a reference against which excess noise can be identified in high- junctions. It is combined with theoretical models of excess noise based on fluctuations of critical current and resistance to provide accurate fitting of the observed noise curves. It is shown that the normalized levels of critical current and normal resistance fluctuations for all of the junction types examined are remarkably close (typically around and at 100 Hz) and are nearly independent of temperature in the range T = 30 - 80 K. The frequency dependence is close to the universal 1/f law with some deviations due to trapping of charge carriers at discrete states in the tunnelling barrier. Measurements of voltage noise levels and critical current fluctuations in multijunction flux-flow amplifiers, reported for the first time, are consistent with levels in single junctions of the same type. Excess noise is studied as a function of external magnetic field, in a way that has not been previously described. A new interpretation of the magnetic field-dependent noise data indicates that absolute levels of critical current fluctuations are nearly independent of applied magnetic field. This observation does not appear to have been reported elsewhere. It has important implications for the operation of grain boundary Josephson devices in real applications. Voltage noise in the presence of microwave irradiation, at operating points between Shapiro steps, is consistent with a modified form of the Likharev - Semenov equation which takes into account the known level of critical current fluctuations as measured in field-free conditions. The implications of these results for further improvements in device performance are discussed, and directions for further work are suggested.

Microwave Heterodyne Mixing by Step-Edge Microbridge Josephson Junctions Using YBaCuO Thin Films

Yoshito Fukumoto, Hiroshi Kajikawa, Rikuo Ogawa +1 more

Current-voltage characteristics and microwave mixing properties of step-edge microbridge Josephson junctions (SEJJs) made of YBaCuO thin films were systematically investigated. The step-edge was formed on the surface of a MgO(100) substrate employing the common photolithograph and wet-etching techniques. YBaCuO thin film was deposited by the off-axis sputtering method, and the microbridge junctions were fabricated so as to cross the step-edge. The SEJJs showed typical DC and AC characteristics which were explained by the resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model. Mixing experiments were carried out in the K-band microwave region. An intermediate frequency (IF) output with the frequency range of 20 MHz∼2.0 GHz was successfully obtained.

Josephson soliton oscillators in a superconducting thin film resonator

J. Holm, J. Mygind, N. F. Pedersen +3 more

Josephson soliton oscillators integrated in a resonator consisting of two closely spaced coplanar superconducting microstrips have been investigated experimentally. Pairs of long 1-D Josephson junctions with a current density of about 1000 A/cm/sup 2/ were made using the Nb-AlO/sub x/-Nb trilayer technique. Different modes of half-wave resonances in the thin-film structure impose different magnetic field configurations at the boundaries of the junctions. The DC I-V characteristic shows zero-field steps with a number of resonator-induced steps. These structures are compared to RF-induced steps generated by phase-locking of the soliton motion to an external microwave source. The two different resonant configurations identified may be interpreted as a coupling to the microwave field at the end boundary and as a more homogeneous coupling distributed over the junction length.>

High T/sub c/ superconducting step-edge junctions and their properties in millimeter-wave band

Yijun Feng, L. Kang, X. B. Wang +8 more

Superconducting step-edge junctions were fabricated on step-edges in (100) LaAlO/sub 3/ substrates by sputter-deposited epitaxial YBaCuO and TlBaCaCuO thin films. The substrate steps were patterned by ion beam etching using metal film as a mask. The transport properties of the junctions were characterized by four-probe electrical measurements. The critical current-normal resistance product (I/sub c/R/sub N/) was larger than 0.2 mV (77 K) for most of the junctions. Clear Shapiro steps were observed in the current-voltage characteristics of the junctions with 36 GHz or 95 GHz millimeter-wave irradiation. The high frequency properties of these high T/sub c/ Josephson junctions showed that they were quite suitable for the Josephson harmonic mixer used in the digital phase locked millimeter and sub-millimeter wave sources.>
