Decay Rate of Energy Eigenfunctions in Classically Energetically Inaccessible Regions in more than One-Dimensional Configuration Spaces

Abstract

An approximate formula is proposed for the decay rate of energy eigenfunctions in classically energetically inaccessible regions in more than one-dimensional configuration spaces. This is achieved by generalizing an approach proposed recently for energy eigenfunctions in the one-dimensional configuration space. The formula is tested numerically in the Pullen–Edmonds model.

Decay Rate of Energy Eigenfunctions in Classically Energetically Inaccessible Regions

王文阁

Classically energetically inaccessible parts of energy eigenfunctions in configuration space are studied by making use of a generalization of Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory. Approximate formulas are proposed for describing local decaying rate of this part of energy eigenfunctions, which are useful in the study of quantum phenomena, such as tunnelling effect, and are tested in an anharmonic oscillator.

Accuracy of the semi-classical approximation: the Pullen - Edmonds hamiltonian

S. Graffi, Manfredi, V R, Salasnich, L

A test on the numerical accuracy of the semiclassical approximation as a function of the principal quantum number has been performed for the Pullen--Edmonds model, a two--dimensional, non--integrable, scaling invariant perturbation of the resonant harmonic oscillator. A perturbative interpretation is obtained of the recently observed phenomenon of the accuracy decrease on the approximation of individual energy levels at the increase of the principal quantum number. Moreover, the accuracy provided by the semiclassical approximation formula is on the average the same as that provided by quantum perturbation theory.

CLASSICAL LIMIT PROBLEM OF QUANTUM MECHANICAL ENERGY EIGENFUNCTIONS — EXTENSION TO TWO- AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL CASES

D. SEN, S. Sengupta

In an earlier paper appropriate limiting procedure is discussed in a general way for quantum mechanical energy eigenfunctions (one-dimensional bound states) — a single interpretational postulate leading smoothly to entire compatible classical objective description without facing any contradiction. The method is consistently extended to two- and three-dimensional cases and it is interesting to note that results of earlier study on the classical limit of the radial distribution function of hydrogen atom are easily obtained as special cases of our analysis.
