Two-state problems involving arbitrary amplitude and frequency modulations

Abstract

Analytic solutions for a class of pulses that includes an infinite variety of amplitude and frequency modulations which we previously obtained are applied specifically to the square, Gaussian, Lorentzian, hyperbolic-secant, and the exponential pulses, among others. For all the different types of amplitude- and its corresponding frequency-modulated functions, the outcome of the atomic excitation is given by the same simple analytic formulas. Our analytic solutions apply equally to two-state collision problems.

Dynamics of Atomic Excitations by Chirped Pulses

C. E. Carroll, F. T. Hioe

We have found new analytic results for a wide variety of atomic excitation processes which involve the use of amplitude-and frequency-modulated laser pulses: (1) We have unified all the previously known solutions including those of Rosen and Zener,1 Landau2 and Zener,3 Rabi,4 Bambini and Berman,5 Demkov,6 McCall and Hahn,7 Allen and Eberly,8 and Hioe,9 among others, and have significantly extended it with expressions involving three free parameters and an arbitrary function to an infinite variety of amplitude-and frequency-modulated laser pulses.10 We have found a simple condition which the three essential parameters in the amplitude-and frequency-modulation functions must satisfy in order to achieve a complete population inversion, or to achieve a complete population restoration as in the case of self-induced transparency7 or soliton propagation.

Solution of Bloch equations involving amplitude and frequency modulations

F. T. Hioe

The undamped Bloch equations are shown to have a more general analytic solution which includes the famous self-induced-transparency solution of McCall and Hahn, and the nonadiabatic excitation solution of Allen and Eberly as special cases. A generalized area characteristic for a laser pulse of modulated amplitude and frequency of the forms of hyperbolic secant and tangent is given. It resolves the difficulty of the previous area concept in the presence of frequency modulation. The solution provides an exact analytic result for the amplitude- and frequency-modulated pulse of any area.

Analytic solutions to the two-state problem for a class of coupling potentials

Arturo Bambini, P. R. Berman

A class of pulse functions is found for which analytic solutions to the problem of two levels coupled by these pulse functions is obtained. The hyperbolic-secant coupling pulse is included in this class of functions leading to the Rosen-Zener solution, but all other pulses belonging to the class function are asymmetric. The asymmetric pulses lead to qualitatively new features in the solutions; in general, it is impossible to have a zero-transition probability with such asymmetric pulses.

Analytic solutions of the two-state problem for a class of chirped pulses

Jakub Zakrzewski

Analytic solutions to the two-state-problem Bloch equations are obtained for a class of smooth chirped pulses. The asymmetric pulses introduced by Bambini and Berman as well as the chirped hyperbolic secant pulse of Hioe belong to the class of pulses discussed.

Analytic solutions of the Bloch equation involving asymmetric amplitude and frequency modulations

Daniel Rosenfeld, Shimon L. Panfil, Yuval Zur

An analytic solution of the Bloch equation is presented using a class of asymmetric complex functions as a driving function. These may involve both amplitude and frequency modulation functions. Analytic solutions that have been previously derived include the amplitude modulated (``real'') hyperbolic secant pulse and its asymmetric generalization in addition to the complex sech/tanh pulse. The solution presented in this paper contains all of these as particular cases. The solution in its complex form is closely associated with an adiabatic fast passage experiment and renders robust magnetization inversion provided the rf amplitude exceeds a certain threshold. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Fifteen classes of solutions of the quantum two-state problem in terms of the confluent Heun function

Artur Mikhailovich Ishkhanyan, A E Grigoryan

We derive 15 classes of time-dependent two-state models solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions. These classes extend over all the known families of three- and two-parametric models solvable in terms of the hypergeometric and the confluent hypergeometric functions to more general four-parametric classes involving three-parametric detuning modulation functions. In the case of constant detuning the field configurations describe excitations of two-state quantum systems by symmetric or asymmetric pulses of controllable width and edge-steepness. The classes that provide constant detuning pulses of finite area are identified and the factors controlling the corresponding pulse shapes are discussed. The positions and the heights of the peaks are mostly defined by two of the three parameters of the detuning modulation function, while the pulse width is mainly controlled by the third one, the constant term. The classes suggest numerous symmetric and asymmetric chirped pulses and a variety of models with two crossings of the frequency resonance. We discuss the excitation of a two-level atom by a pulse of Lorentzian shape with a detuning providing one or two crossings of the resonance. We derive closed form solutions for particular curves in the 3D space of the involved parameters which compose the complete return spectrum of the considered two-state quantum system.
