Abstract

The dependence of the threshold pump energy of dye lasers on the quantum yield of fluorescence of active solutions in the case of laser excitation was studied. The rate of increase in the threshold pump energy was found to be considerably lower than the rate of decrease in quantum yield. The results were interpreted in terms of the development of the cooperative interaction between active centers in the high-intensity coherent pump field.

Dependence of cooperative emission spectra of complex organic molecules on exciting photon energy

V. P. Klochkov, E. B. Verkhovskiĭ

The dependences of cooperative emission, superfluorescence, and lasing spectra on the wavelength of pumping radiation were studied for highly concentrated ethanol solutions of organic dye molecules. The relative intensity of cooperative emission was found to decrease, while the intensities of superfluorescence and lasing were found to increase with the energy of exciting photons. The increase in the dephasing rate of quantum states is supposed to be primarily responsible for the change in proportion between these intensities. On increasing the dephasing rate, with all other factors being the same, the concentration of the excited molecules with the phased quantum states decreases, while that with the dephased states increases. The ratio between the cooperative emission and dephasing rates determines the proportion between the intensities of cooperative emission, superfluorescence, and lasing. The onset of lasing at high concentrations (above >10 19 cm −3 ) in the case of pumping by high-energy photons occurs due to the high dephasing rates of quantum states resulting from a more rapid redistribution of vibrational energy.

Collective spontaneous emission of dye molecules and lasing

V. P. Klochkov, E. B. Verkhovskiĭ

The threshold pump power density for lasing in dye solutions is found to depend on the photon energy of pumping radiation. An increase in the pumping photon energy can significantly lower the threshold pump power of dye lasers. For an ethanol solution of rhodamine 6G with a concentration of 4×10 18 cm −3 , the threshold power density for pumping radiation with a wavelength of 532 nm is 20-fold higher than for pumping radiation with a wavelength of 347 nm. This phenomenon is associated with the competition of collective spontaneous emission, which can lead to the efficient deactivation of excited molecules in femtosecond times, and the dephasing of excited molecules due to the intramolecular nonradiative processes of absorbed-energy conversion. An increase in the dephasing rate with the increasing energy of exciting photons lowers the efficiency of collective spontaneous emission and increases the concentration of dephased excited molecules responsible for lasing.

Influence of spontaneous emission on the threshold longitudinal pump power of dye lasers

V. P. Klochkov, E. B. Verkhovskiĭ

The stimulated emission threshold of a dye laser was found to depend on the method of formation of a longitudinal pulsed laser beam used as the pump. Excitation with a focused pump beam reduced the lasing threshold. The effect was strongest when the Q factor of the resonator cavity was low. This reduction in the lasing threshold by focusing the pump laser beam was attributed to an increase in the rate of spontaneous emission resulting from lasing of desqueezed states (enhancement of 'zero-field' fluctuations responsible for the appearance of spontaneous emission). An increase in the spontaneous emission rate reduced the buildup time of stimulated emission during the early stages and thus reduced the lasing threshold.

Cooperative emission of dye molecules at high dephasing rates

V. P. Klochkov, E. B. Verkhovskiĭ

The dependence of the emission of a concentrated (∼10 19 cm −3 solution of Rhodamine C on the power density Φ of exciting laser radiation was studied. The emission intensity for the power density of exciting radiation above ∼10 25 cm −2 s −1 was found to have a nearly quadratic dependence on the power density Φ, and this emission was interpreted as the cooperative spontaneous emission of a Dicke type. For Φ≲10 25 cm −2 s −1 , the emission intensity increased with increasing Φ according to the exponential law. This emission was interpreted as the amplified spontaneous emission. The spectra of cooperative emission depended on the pump radiation power only weakly. The absence of lasing in dye solutions at high concentrations, which is a well-known phenomenon, was shown to be caused by the development of the cooperative spontaneous emission and not by the concentration quenching, and the former process is more rapid than the latter.

Absorption and emission dynamics in concentrated optical ensembles under laser excitation

В. Смирнов, Г. М. Ермолаева, В. Б. Шилов

A new theoretical model describing the emission and absorption dynamics in an ensemble of molecules under intense coherent pulsed pumping is developed on the basis of the concepts of cooperative light-induced luminescence (CLIL). The CLIL development is described within the framework of formalism of the system density matrix in the space of photon wave functions. It is shown that the fast growth of CLIL relates to the development of coherent states of the quantum field in the area of efficient cooperative interactions of molecules (coherence volume). A system of equations for the calculation of CLIL energy, population of excited states, and optical absorption of the system in dependence on the laser pump energy density is solved. The theoretical results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Cooperative Effect Radiation Loss of Optical Pump Solid Laser

Guicai Song

The cooperative effect radiation loss of the optical pumped solid laser has been investigated. The characteristics and the cause of coherent spontaneous are discussed using Maxwell-Bloch equation in the paper. By laser rate equation, the expression of upper energy level lifetime shortening due to the cooperative effect radiation is given. The influence of the cooperative effect on laser threshold and the loss are analyzed. By a series of experiments, the relation ship of coherent spontaneous radiation intensity and direction with reversal population and the power of optical pump are obtained.
