The transverse Ising model: fermionic representation and the functional integral approach

Abstract

The authors derive a functional integral representation for the partition function of the transverse Ising model. The spin operators are replaced by fermion operators and special care is taken to achieve complete equivalence of the spin model and the fermion model. They discuss several approximations for the functional integral and show that in a recent paper on spin glasses, where a similar method was used, the original spin model and the fermion model, which was obtained by replacing the spin operators by fermion operators, are not equivalent and have different critical temperatures.

Pathology of the Fermionic Representation of Transverse Ising Model

GUO Xiao-Ting, Li Peng

When studying the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, we usually transform the spin operators to fermion operators by applying the Jordan-Wigner transformation,i.e.we take it for granted that the spin model and corresponding fermionic model are equivalent naively. But deliberate treatment could reveal that the equivalence accompanies some delicate conditions.Redundant degrees of freedom should be projected out carefully, especially for finite length of chain. In this paper, we compare the two models in detail so as to find the conditions of equivalence of them, including the interaction, the boundary conditions, and odevity of the number of lattice sites. We also exemplify in detail how to project out the redundant degrees of freedom for the fermionic representation.

Exact thermal properties of free-fermionic spin chains

Michał Białończyk, Fernando J. Gómez-Ruiz, DEL CAMPO ECHEVARRIA, Adolfo

An exact description of integrable spin chains at finite temperature is provided using an elementary algebraic approach in the complete Hilbert space of the system. We focus on spin chain models that admit a description in terms of free fermions, including paradigmatic examples such as the one-dimensional transverse-field quantum Ising and XY models. The exact partition function is derived and compared with the ubiquitous approximation in which only the positive parity sector of the energy spectrum is considered.Errors stemming from this approximation are identified in the neighborhood of the critical point at low temperatures. We further provide the full counting statistics of a wide class of observables at thermal equilibrium and characterize in detail the thermal distribution of the kink number and transverse magnetization in the transverse-field quantum Ising chain.

Relationship between d-Dimensional Quantal Spin Systems and (d+1)-Dimensional Ising Systems: Equivalence, Critical Exponents and Systematic Approximants of the Partition Function and Spin Correlations

Masuo Suzuki

The partition function of a quantal spin system is expressed by that of the Ising model, on the basis of the generalized Trotter formula. Thereby the ground state of the d-dimensional Ising model with a transverse field is proven to be equivalent to the (d+1)-dimensional Ising model at finite temperatures. A general relationship is established between the two partition functions of a general quantal spin system and the corresponding Ising model with many-spin interactions, which yields some rigorous results on quantum systems. Some applications are given.

The Grassmann Representation of Ising Model

K. Nojima

The integral representations for the partition functions of Ising models are surveyed. The connection with the underlying fermion field in the two-dimensional case is discussed. The relation between the low and the high-temperature expansions is examined.

Replica symmetry breaking in the transverse-field Ising spin-glass model: Two fermionic representations

Eduardo Muccillo Monteiro Santos, Alba Theumann

We analyze the infinite range Ising spin glass in a transverse-field $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ below the critical temperature by a one step replica symmetry breaking theory. The set of $n$ replicas is divided in $r$ blocks of $m$ replicas each. We present results for different values of the block-size parameter $m$. The spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic fields and we compare the results of two models: In the four-states (4-S) model the diagonal ${S}_{i}^{z}$ operator has two unphysical vanishing eigenvalues, that are suppressed by a restraint in the two-states (2-S) model. In the static approximation we obtain qualitatively similar results for both models. They both exhibit a critical temperature ${T}_{c}(\ensuremath{\Gamma})$ that decreases when $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ increases, until it reaches a quantum critical point at the same value of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{c}$ and they are both unstable under replica symmetry breaking in the whole spin glass phase. Below the critical temperature we present results for the order parameters and free energy.
