Energy-Time Generated Involutions as a Criterion for Quantum States to Exhibit Phase-Free Recurrence

Alim Mohammed

This paper develops an operator-theoretic framework for characterising a phenomenon we call phase-free recurrence: the exact return of a quantum state to itself under unitary time evolution, with no global phase change whatsoever.Starting from the unitary time-evolution operator , we construct a Hermitian operator via symmetrisation, yielding the cosine operator . Applying the real sign function to this operator defines a new operator , which we prove to be an involution — a self-inverse linear operator — whenever none of the cosines of the energy eigenvalues vanish. The involutory structure of induces a canonical decomposition of the Hilbert space into three mutually orthogonal subspaces corresponding to eigenvalues +1, −1, and 0. We study the kernel subspace in detail, characterising the discrete periodic times at which each energy component enters it.Using this structure we derive a precise algebraic criterion for phase-free recurrence. For a two-level system with energy eigenvalues and , we prove that phase-free recurrence occurs if and only if the ratio is rational. This result is generalised to arbitrary n-level systems, where it takes the form of a simultaneous proportionality condition on the integers labelling the kernel-recurrence times of each energy component. The framework is purely algebraic, relying only on the spectral theorem and elementary properties of involutions, and applies to any quantum system with a discrete non-degenerate spectrum.

Evolution of Quantum Systems with a Discrete Energy Spectrum in an Adiabatically Varying External Field

Yury Belousov

We introduce a new approach for describing nonstationary quantum systems with a discrete energy spectrum. The essence of this approach is that we describe the evolution of a quantum system in a time-dependent basis. In a sense, this approach is similar to the description of the system in the interaction representation. However, the time dependence of the basic states of the representation is determined not by the evolution operator with a time-independent Hamiltonian but by the eigenstates of the time-dependent Hamiltonian defined at the current time. The time dependence of the basic states of the representation leads to the appearance of an additional term in the Schrödinger equation, which in the case of slowly changing parameters of the Hamiltonian can be considered as a small perturbation. The adiabatic representation is suitable in cases where it is impossible to apply the standard interaction representation. The application of the adiabatic representation is illustrated by the example of two spins connected by a magnetic dipole–dipole interaction in a slowly varying external magnetic field.

Cyclic states, Berry phases and the Schrodinger operator

Alla N. Seleznyova

The evolution of a quantum mechanical system under a nonadiabatic external perturbation at a time interval (0,T) is considered. It is shown that all the cyclic states of the system, mod Psi (T))=e i phi mod Psi (0)), are determined by the eigenvalues in (quasi-energies) and associated eigenvectors mod phi in (t)) of the Schrodinger operator S q (t)=H(t)-i( delta / delta t) acting on some Hilbert space. The set of linearly independent cyclic (quasi-energy) states possess some properties similar to the properties of the stationary states of a closed system. The Berry phases of the states associated with eigenvectors of the discrete spectrum of S q (t), which are single-valued functions of omega =2 pi /T, are supplied by the partial derivatives of the corresponding eigenvalues (quasi-energies) with respect to omega . The approach developed is illustrated by several applications to time-dependent systems: the system under an adiabatic perturbation, the forced harmonic oscillator, and the two-level system. Even in the case of a system with a time-independent Hamiltonian there exist nonstationary quasi-energy states that have nontrivial Berry phases ( beta /2 pi not an integer). The criterion of existence of such states is formulated in terms of the energies of the system, and the corresponding expression for the Berry phases is obtained. Some examples of nonstationary cyclic states of closed systems, including the coherent states of a force-free oscillator and the Wannier states of electrons in the parabolic band, are considered.
