States, Minimizing the Uncertainty Product of the Oscillator Phase Operators

Abstract

The normalizable states that minimize the uncertainty product of the oscillator phase operators are determined and some of their physical properties are discussed. A physical classification of these states has been made and the class of ``analogous'' states to the well-known coherent states is physically defined.

Minimum Uncertainty Product, Number-Phase Uncertainty Product, and Coherent States

R. Jackiw

The number-phase uncertainty products proposed by Carruthers and Nieto are studied to determine whether they are minimized by coherent states. It is found that coherent states do not minimize these products. States that do minimize some of the uncertainty products are constructed. Variational techniques for the study of arbitrary uncertainty products are developed.

Minimal Uncertainty States for Bounded Observables

Evangelos K. Ifantis

The procedure of finding the states, which minimize the uncertainty product of two noncompatible observables, leads to the study of the approximate point spectrum of a non-self-adjoint operator. The spectrum of a large class of such bounded non-self-adjoint operators is studied. The results are applied to the theory of the oscillator phase operators.

New coherent states with applications to time-dependent systems

A. K. Rajagopal, John T. Marshall

A new class of coherent states is defined, having all the properties of the usual coherent states except that the uncertainty product of position and momentum need not be minimum. From the stationary-action principle, the dynamical equations of motion for the expectation values and uncertainties for position and momentum are deduced. For the time-dependent harmonic oscillator, the equation for the uncertainty in the position is found to be the well-known Lewis constraint.

SU(1,1) coherent states defined via a minimum-uncertainty product and an equality of quadrature variances

Ravinder Rupchand Puri, G. S. Agarwal

The coherent states of a Hamiltonian linear in SU(1,1) operators are constructed by defining them, in analogy with the harmonic-oscillator coherent states, as the minimum-uncertainty states with equal variance in two observables. The proposed approach is thus based on a physical characteristic of the harmonic-oscillator coherent states which is in contrast with the existing ones which rely on the generalization of the mathematical methods used for constructing the harmonic-oscillator coherent states. The set of states obtained by following the proposed method contains not only the known SU(1,1) coherent states but also a different class of states. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
