Abstract

Abstract The combination of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations and the quantum Monte Carlo method is used to examine ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a generalized type of hopping. It is found that the long-range hopping with exponentially decaying hopping amplitudes t ij ∼ − q Ri−Rj stabilizes the ferromagnetic state for a wide range of electron interactions U and electron concentrations n > 1. The critical value of the hopping parameter q c above which the ferromagnetic state becomes stable is calculated numerically and the ground-state phase diagram of the model is discussed for physically the most interesting cases.

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model with a generalized type of hopping

Pavol Farkašovský

The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with a generalized type of hopping. It is found that the long-range hopping with power decaying hopping amplitudes ${(t}_{\mathrm{ij}}\ensuremath{\sim}{q}^{|i\ensuremath{-}j|})$ stabilizes the ferromagnetic state for a wide range of electron interactions U and electron concentrations n. The critical value of the interaction strength ${U}_{c}(q)$ above which the ferromagnetic state becomes stable is calculated numerically and the ground-state phase diagram of the model (in the $U\ensuremath{-}q$ plane) is presented for physically the most interesting cases.

Phase diagram of the simplified Hubbard model with a generalized type of hopping in an external magnetic field

Pavol Farkašovský

The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine the zero-temperature phase diagram of the simplified Hubbard model in an external magnetic field. Using a general expression for hopping matrix elements ${(t}_{\mathrm{ij}}\ensuremath{\sim}{q}^{|i\ensuremath{-}j|})$ the influence of the long-range hopping (the asymmetry of the density of states) on ground-state properties, and particularly on ferromagnetism is studied. It is found that the long-range hopping (the asymmetric density of states) stabilizes the ferromagnetic state for a wide range of electron interactions $U$ and electron concentrations $n$. The critical value of magnetic field $h$ below which the ferromagnetic state becomes unstable is calculated numerically. It is shown that below this critical value the ferromagnetic state breaks down into a metallic state for weak coupling and an insulating state for strong coupling. The phase diagram of the model in the $h\ensuremath{-}U$ plane is presented for physically the most interesting cases.

The Influence of Long-Range Hopping on Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard Model

Pavol Farkašovský

The phase diagram of the Hubbard model in an external magnetic field is examined by extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations. Using a general expression for the hopping matrix elements (tij ~ q|i-j|) the influence of long-range hopping (band asymmetry) on ferromagnetism in this model is studied. It is found that the long-range hopping (nonzero q) stabilizes ferromagnetism in an external magnetic field for n > 1. In the opposite limit n≤1 the fully polarized ferromagnetic state is generally suppressed with increasing q. The critical value of magnetic field h below which the ferromagnetic state becomes unstable is calculated numerically.

Ferromagnetism in one-dimensional Hubbard model induced by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping at electron density 3/2

Yuan-Yuan Yang, Jian Zhang, Hui Pan +1 more

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is explored by using the exact-diagonalization method in a small cluster and the equation-of-motion method in the thermodynamic limit with electron density n = 3/2. With these two complementary methods, it is found that an intermediate value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude t1 tends to stabilize the fully polarized ferromagnetic state under the condition that the on-site coulomb interaction U is sufficiently large in our model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is presented in the t1—U plane.

Two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch

We study the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor (t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${t}_{2}$) hopping and on-site repulsion U. We first calculate the mean-field phase diagram as a function of band filling and U. Because of the Van Hove singularity in the density of states, we find a ferromagnetic phase extending to zero U for certain band filling. For the half-filled band case, antiferromagnetism sets in at a finite value of U if ${t}_{2}$\ensuremath{\ne}0. We study the behavior of spin-spin correlation functions for small lattices of up to N=64 atoms using Monte Carlo simulations, as well as exact diagonalization for N=4. Our results show enhanced ferromagnetic correlations in some regions, but apparently no ferromagnetic long-range order. In the half-filled case, our numerical results are consistent with a nonzero critical U. For a non-half-filled band our results suggest that there is no long-range order.
