Above-threshold ionization of cesium by 1.9-μm light

Abstract

Multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms has been studied with both linearly and circularly polarized light pulses of 1.9-\ensuremath{\mu}m wavelength. Photoelectron energy spectra show that the use of circular polarization leads to a strong reduction of above-threshold ionization (ATI), in comparison to linear polarization, and not to suppression of low-order ATI peaks. This behavior is different from that expected for hydrogen under similar circumstances. Calculations reproduce the behavior of cesium and indicate that it can be attributed to the large size of the ground state of cesium.

Multiphoton ionization of cesium via quadrupole transitions: Photoelectron angular distributions and polarization effects on total ionization rates

A. Lyras, Bo-nian Dai, Xian Tang +5 more

We report measurements of photoelectron angular distributions via electric quadrupole transitions in cesium atoms using multiphoton excitation techniques. Experimental results are presented for the cases of one-photon resonant, two-photon ionization via the 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{3/2}$ and 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ electric quadrupole transitions and for one-photon resonant, three-photon ionization via the 5d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$ ${\mathrm{D}}_{3/2}$ and 5d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ transitions. The ratios of the total ionization rates for linearly and circularly polarized light have also been measured for the 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${\mathrm{D}}_{3/2}$ and 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ states. A theoretical analysis and detailed comparison with the experimental results are given.

Suppression of multiphoton ionization with circularly polarized light

Thomas J. Mcilrath, P. H. Bucksbaum, Mark Bashkansky +2 more

Multiphoton ionization in xenon has been studied using 1064 nm circularly polarized coherent light, producing electrons with energies up to 15 eV. A strong suppression of the cross section is observed for electrons below 4 eV, but not for linearly polarized light at the same intensity. We show that if the electrons are emitted in single step nonresonant coherent processes, rather than stepwise excitation, the centrifugal potential barrier in the atomic Hamiltonian produces this suppression.

Multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms above and below the two-photon ionization threshold

Adila Dodhy, John A. D. Stockdale, R. N. Compton

Two‐ and three‐photon ionization processes in cesium atoms using a single pulsed‐dye laser and a cesium atomic beam have been investigated. Photoelectron angular distributions have been measured for two‐photon resonant, three‐photon ionization via the nd states (n=12, 15, and 21), for two‐photon nonresonant transitions over the photoelectron energy range from ∼26−100 meV, and for ‘‘quasi‐free‐free’’ transitions.

Multiphoton ionization in strong fields

Harm Geert Muller, A. Tip

The photoionization of atoms in a strong electromagnetic field leads to the effect of "above-threshold" ionization, displaying a number of peaks in the energy spectrum of the photoelectrons. In the case of a one-electron model atom in a circularly polarized field, we derive expressions that describe the position as well as the intensity of those peaks as a function of the field parameters by means of a nonperturbative method. It is immediately clear from our formulas that the lowest-energy peaks in general disappear with increasing field intensity, for Coulomb-like as well as shortrange potentials. For a zero-range potential, a numerical evaluation is easily performed, leading to results that are in every respect qualitatively similar to the experimental results obtained thus far on these kinds of processes.
