Abstract

We performed a comprehensive study of the temporal dynamics of a two-photon laser with resonant injected signal in the high-Q cavity limit (class-A laser). The stationary solutions as well as their stability are completely characterized. In particular it is shown that tristable behaviour is possible, in contrast with two-photon optical bistability. It is also shown that there are two independent Hopf bifurcations, the sub- or supercritical character of which is analytically determined. The dynamics of the system far from the bifurcation points is classified through a numerical study.

Stability properties of a resonant cascade laser

Germán J. de Valcárcel, Eugenio Roldán, Ramon A. Vilaseca

The emission of a resonant nondegenerate cascade laser in which up to two fields can be simultaneously amplified inside a cavity is theoretically investigated. Each field is resonantly coupled with one of the transitions of a ladder three-level atomic system, in conditions of homogeneous broadening. General analytical expressions for zero-, one-, and two-field solutions are given. Cooperative emission between both fields is found. Through the linear stability analysis of these solutions we obtain phase diagrams showing their respective domains of stability. Together with the existence of Hopf bifurcations associated with one-photon processes, which coincide with those of a Lorenz-Haken laser, a genuine Hopf bifurcation due to two-photon processes has been found. This last bifurcation does not require the ``bad cavity'' nor the ``Lorenz threshold'' conditions. The stability of the orbits that bifurcate from these critical points is analytically investigated. For this we have rewritten one of the standard criteria in a useful and straightforward way. Finally, the dynamic regimes exhibited by the system well above the instability thresholds is numerically investigated revealing transitions to chaos via quasiperiodicity.

Nonlinear dynamics of a class-a two-photon laser with injected signal in cascade systems

Javier F. Urchueguía, V. Espinosa, Germán J. de Valcárcel

The dynamics of a two-photon laser with injected signal (TPLIS) in the limit of high quality cavity (class-A laser) is analysed by explicitly considering the underlying multi-level structure of the amplifying medium. A three-level cascade system is considered which retains the basic physics of the microscopic lasing processes. In this way the usual two-photon laser equations are consistently modified by the appearance of different dynamic frequency shifts dependent on the two-photon population inversion and on the laser intensity (ac-Stark shift). Although the basic instability scenarios are not qualitatively modified with respect to the effective two-level TPLIS, from the quantitative point of view, population-induced shifts heavily affect the threshold of appearance of instabilities.

Periodic attractors in two-photon processes

Paul Mandel, Nicolas Pettiaux, Wang Kaige +2 more

We consider three nonlinear optical models that display a two-photon process and exhibit a Hopf bifurcation corresponding to a phase instability. The three models describe second-harmonic generation, two-photon optical bistability, and degenerate four-wave mixing in resonant cavities. In all three cases we consider only the resonant configuration and analyze the attractors which emerge when the driving field is increased beyond the Hopf bifurcation threshold. At a finite distance from threshold, we find a hysteresis domain that involves a pair of periodic attractors. For all three models, each of the two solutions has the same ``field portrait'' i.e., the same representation in a plane whose axes are the imaginary and the real parts of the electric field. This suggests that the scenario is generic for this class of systems. On the other hand, the models for two-photon optical bistability and degenerate four-wave mixing in resonant cavities exhibit additional nongeneric attractors when the driving field is further increased.

Stationary emission and stability of a detuned cascade laser

Eugenio Roldán, Germán J. de Valcárcel, Ramon A. Vilaseca +1 more

The stationary emission and stability of a three-level cascade laser in which two fields of different frequencies can be simultaneously amplified is investigated under conditions of cavity detuning. Different monomode and bimode solutions are found and analysed for the effects of different pitchfork and Hopf bifurcations. At moderate cavity detunings, features different from those observed in other classes of lasers are found, such as for instance a decrease in the instability threshold when detuning is introduced. Particular attention is paid to the case of resonance of the two-photon transition, which allows us to study the continuous evolution, when detuning is increased, of a resonant cascade laser towards a pure two-photon laser. In particular, this establishes the origin of some features which are characteristic of two-photon lasers.

Multiple Bifurcations in Coherent n-photon Processes

Timothy Poston, Daniel F. Walls, P. Zoller

We consider a new class of bifurcations that may arise in multiphoton processes inside a coherently driven optical cavity involving more than one mode of the radiation field. For a non-saturable, non-linear medium, a single bifurcation point exists where the symmetric solution bifurcates into a number of non-symmetric solutions. The nature of the bifurcation ranges from a simple pitchfork bifurcation, in the case of four-wave mixing, to more complicated phenomena in higher-order processes. A saturable non-linear medium exhibits similar behaviour for low-input intensities; however, as the input intensity is increased the medium saturates, and at a second bifurcation point the symmetric branch regains its stability. The presence of fluctuations assures the accessibility of the symmetric branch. Thus, for example, for a two-photon absorbing medium we have the possibility of optical tristability involving one symmetric solution and two non-symmetric solutions.

BISTABILITY IN A TWO-PHOTON LASER WITH INJECTED SIGNAL

Wang Yinghai, HU CHENG-SHENG, Wang Zhicheng +1 more

By means of the semiclassical method, we discuss the bistability in a two-photon laser with injected signal for the homogeneously broadened single mode ring cavity. It is demonstrated that in the resonant case one can find bistable states in a two-photon laser with injected signal. In the limit of "good cavity" and "bad cavity", we give a simple description of bistability leading to a predictions for the transient behavior of the output light and the hysteresis cycle by adiabatically eliminating the fast variables. It is found that the approach to the stationary state is monotonic in the low-branch and is oscillatory in the high-branch, and a critical slowing down occurs where the output field changes discontinuousiy.
