Calculation of metastable states associated with dtμJν ion using the variational method

Abstract

A series of metastable states below the $t\ensuremath{\mu}(2s)+d$ threshold have been discovered. The structure of the metastable $dt{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{J\ensuremath{\nu}}$ ion is studied here by the related suitable wave function and using the variational method. Few resonance energies and the related widths for $dt{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{J\ensuremath{\nu}}$ molecular states located below the $2s$ threshold are determined. For precise assessment of the reliability of the given wave function, the resonance formation rate is also calculated for the states which take place in the Vesman region. The obtained results are close to those previously reported and give strong indications that the related wave function is good enough to be useful for further calculations.

Formation of metastable dtμ molecules in tμ(2s)−D2 collisions

Janne Wallenius, P. Froelich

The formation process of metastable $\mathrm{dt}\ensuremath{\mu}$ molecules in ${D}_{2}\ensuremath{-}{T}_{2}$ mixtures in investigated. The $\mathrm{dt}\ensuremath{\mu}$ molecule exhibits a series of three-body resonances embedded in the $t\ensuremath{\mu}+d$ scattering continuum just below the $t\ensuremath{\mu}(2s)+d$ threshold. These states can be formed in collisions of excited $t\ensuremath{\mu}(2s)$ atoms with ${D}_{2}$ molecules, whereby the excess of binding energy is absorbed by the rovibrational degrees of freedom of ${D}_{2}$. We present a scattering-theoretic model for this process, and perform a numerical calculation of its cross section. The essential transition amplitudes are obtained from three-body wave functions for the $\mathrm{dt}\ensuremath{\mu}$ subcluster, and adiabatic wave functions for the entire hybrid system in the final channel. It is found that the effective formation rate is limited by the Auger-transition rates of the molecular complex formed. The calculated cross sections exhibit broad "peaks," with magnitudes large enough for the formation process to favorably compete with deexcitation of $t\ensuremath{\mu}(n=2)$ atoms via radiative and collisional processes. The formation of metastable $\mathrm{dt}\ensuremath{\mu}$ can therefore be one of the fastest processes depleting the $n=2$ levels of the $t\ensuremath{\mu}$ atom in hydrogen mixtures, of importance for low-energy muon science, electroweak physics, and muon catalyzed fusion.

Variational calculation of energy levels in p¯He+ molecular systems

V. I. Korobov

A variational calculation is presented of energy levels for the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian of the metastable antiprotonic helium atom ${\overline{p}}^{3, 4}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}$. This calculation is based on a molecular expansion of the wave function. We estimate the precision of the results to be about ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ a.u.

Decay of a metastable state: A variational approximation

E. Freidkin, Peter S. Riseborough, Peter Hänggi A

We consider the decay of a metastable state, coupled to a thermal reservoir, by quantum tunnelling. We calculate the leading exponential term in the W.K.B. expansion of the decay rate through a variational approximation. The approach is simple, quick and versatile, when compared with the alternative method which involves the numerical solution of non-linear, non-local, integro-differential equations. We have demonstrated the versatility of the variational approach by applying it to a few types of potentials, most of which have not been previously studied. In the few cases where numerical results are available, the variational approximation gives excellent agreement. In the cases where no numerical results are available for comparison, the variational approximation reproduces trends that are either physically reasonable or that may be inferred by interpolation between exactly soluble limits. We also address the question: What are the effects of frequency dependent friction, or a finite noise correlation time, on the quantum tunnellling rate? This question is one that has been recently broached in the discussion of experiments on highly damped r.f. SQUIDs and Josephson junctions. We find that the effect of the memory time is to reduce the lifetime of the metastable state, towards its undamped value. Again, we find that the variational approximation reproduces the exact variation of the action to a surprisingly good degree of accuracy.

Low-energy positron scattering from metastable helium

Anonymous, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi +1 more

Low-energy positron scattering from singlet and triplet metastable He($1s2s$) is investigated using the $R$-matrix propagation method in hyperspherical coordinates. Elastic and positronium-formation cross sections are reported, and near-threshold resonance structures are analyzed in terms of eigenphase sums and the time-delay matrix. For the triplet target, the calculated cross sections are in agreement with available convergent-close-coupling results and display the expected threshold behavior. Beyond the known $S$-wave features, Feshbach resonance series in higher partial waves extending up to highly excited atomic thresholds are systematically identified. The time-delay matrix further uncovers hidden resonances that produce obvious structures in the positronium-formation cross sections.

Variational Calculations on Electron-Helium Scattering

A. L. Sinfailam, ROBERT K. NESBET

Calculations have been made on the elastic scattering of low-energy electrons by helium using a variational procedure which takes polarization and correlation effects into account by means of continuum Bethe-Goldstone equations. The convergence of the results is examined using two methods to obtain a complete set of basis functions. Results for the $s$, $p$, $d$, and $f$ waves are presented. The width of the $^{2}S$ closed-channel resonance below the $n=2$ threshold is found to be 0.015 eV, in comparison with the 0.015-0.020-eV estimates of Andrick and Ehrhardt from experiment and the 0.01-eV estimate of Simpson and Fano.
