Asymptotic formulae for the quantum Rényi entropies of position: application to the infinite well

Abstract

General asymptotic formulae are derived by means of the WKB approximation for the continuous and discrete Rényi entropies of position of one-dimensional quantum systems in energy eigenstates, in terms of the corresponding entropies for a microcanonical ensemble of analogous classical systems. These results are checked in the simplest particular case of the infinite potential well, where the asymptotic formula for continuous entropies holds as an exact identity. For the discrete entropies, analytical expressions are obtained from which the asymptotic formulae given for the limiting cases of large and small measurement resolution can both be verified.

Quantum-information entropies for highly excited states of single-particle systems with power-type potentials

J. S. Dehesa, Andrei Martı́nez-Finkelshtein, Vladimir Nikolaevich Sorokin

The asymptotics of the Boltzmann-Shannon information entropy as well as the Renyi entropy for the quantum probability density of a single-particle system with a confining (i.e., bounded below) power-type potential ${V(x)=x}^{2k}$ with $k\ensuremath{\in}N$ and $x\ensuremath{\in}R,$ is investigated in the position and momentum spaces within the semiclassical (WKB) approximation. It is found that for highly excited states both physical entropies, as well as their sum, have a logarithmic dependence on its quantum number not only when $k=1$ (harmonic oscillator), but also for any fixed k. As a by-product, the extremal case $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{k}\ensuremath{\infty}$ (the infinite well potential) is also rigorously analyzed. It is shown that not only the position-space entropy has the same constant value for all quantum states, which is a known result, but also that the momentum-space entropy is constant for highly excited states.

Rényi Entropies of Multidimensional Oscillator and Hydrogenic Systems with Applications to Highly Excited Rydberg States

J. S. Dehesa

The various facets of the internal disorder of quantum systems can be described by means of the Rényi entropies of their single-particle probability density according to modern density functional theory and quantum information techniques. In this work, we first show the lower and upper bounds for the Rényi entropies of general and central-potential quantum systems, as well as the associated entropic uncertainty relations. Then, the Rényi entropies of multidimensional oscillator and hydrogenic-like systems are reviewed and explicitly determined for all bound stationary position and momentum states from first principles (i.e., in terms of the potential strength, the space dimensionality and the states's hyperquantum numbers). This is possible because the associated wavefunctions can be expressed by means of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Emphasis is placed on the most extreme, non-trivial cases corresponding to the highly excited Rydberg states, where the Rényi entropies can be amazingly obtained in a simple, compact, and transparent form. Powerful asymptotic approaches of approximation theory have been used when the polynomial's degree or the weight-function parameter(s) of the Hermite, Laguerre, and Gegenbauer polynomials have large values. At present, these special states are being shown of increasing potential interest in quantum information and the associated quantum technologies, such as e.g., quantum key distribution, quantum computation, and quantum metrology.

Renyi entropy of chaotic eigenstates

Tsung-Cheng Lu, Tarun Grover

Using arguments built on ergodicity, we derive an analytical expression for the Renyi entanglement entropies which, we conjecture, applies to the finite-energy density eigenstates of chaotic many-body Hamiltonians. The expression is a universal function of the density of states and is valid even when the subsystem is a finite fraction of the total system-a regime in which the reduced density matrix is not thermal. We find that in the thermodynamic limit, only the von Neumann entropy density is independent of the subsystem to the total system ratio V_{A}/V, while the Renyi entropy densities depend nonlinearly on V_{A}/V. Surprisingly, Renyi entropies S_{n} for n>1 are convex functions of the subsystem size, with a volume law coefficient that depends on V_{A}/V, and exceeds that of a thermal mixed state at the same energy density. We provide two different arguments to support our results: the first one relies on a many-body version of Berry's formula for chaotic quantum-mechanical systems, and is closely related to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. The second argument relies on the assumption that for a fixed energy in a subsystem, all states in its complement allowed by the energy conservation are equally likely. We perform an exact diagonalization study on quantum spin-chain Hamiltonians to test our analytical predictions.

Entropic uncertainty measures for large dimensional hydrogenic systems

David Puertas‐Centeno, Nico Μ. Τemme, I. V. Toranzo +1 more

The entropic moments of the probability density of a quantum system in position and momentum spaces describe not only some fundamental and/or experimentally accessible quantities of the system but also the entropic uncertainty measures of Rényi type, which allow one to find the most relevant mathematical formalizations of the position-momentum Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the entropic uncertainty relations. It is known that the solution of difficult three-dimensional problems can be very well approximated by a series development in 1/D in similar systems with a non-standard dimensionality D; moreover, several physical quantities of numerous atomic and molecular systems have been numerically shown to have values in the large-D limit comparable to the corresponding ones provided by the three-dimensional numerical self-consistent field methods. The D-dimensional hydrogenic atom is the main prototype of the physics of multidimensional many-electron systems. In this work, we rigorously determine the leading term of the Rényi entropies of the D-dimensional hydrogenic atom at the limit of large D. As a byproduct, we show that our results saturate the known position-momentum Rényi-entropy-based uncertainty relations.

Fully quantum fidelity-based entropic continuity bounds

Matthew Simon Tan, Ernest Y. -Z. Tan

We present a continuity bound for quantum conditional entropies in terms of fidelity, with no dependence on the dimension of the conditioning system. Our results encompass both the von Neumann entropy and one version of sandwiched Rényi entropy, which is particularly relevant for applications in quantum key distribution (QKD). In such applications, this bound should provide improved results as compared to previous continuity bounds based on trace distance. We also show that the bounds can be sharpened as expected for classical-quantum states, and verify that they hold when the conditioning system has countably infinite dimension. Finally, we present several variants tailored for exponential functions of the Rényi entropies instead, which should be relevant for QKD applications.

From Classical to Quantum: Uniform Continuity Bounds on Entropies in Infinite Dimensions

Simon Becker, Nilanjana Datta, Michael G. Jabbour

We prove a variety of improved uniform continuity bounds for entropies of both classical random variables on an infinite state space and of quantum states of infinite-dimensional systems. We obtain the first tight continuity estimate on the Shannon entropy of random variables with a countably infinite alphabet. The proof relies on a new mean-constrained Fano-type inequality. We then employ this classical result to derive a tight energy-constrained continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy. To deal with more general entropies in infinite dimensions,e.g.$\alpha $-Rényi and$\alpha $-Tsallis entropies, we develop a novel approximation scheme based on operator Hölder continuity estimates. Finally, we settle an open problem raised by Shirokov regarding the characterisation of states with finite entropy.
