Abstract

A review is given dealing with the recent state of the art of the following topics presented at the FQMT’11 conference: foundations of quantum physics, quantum measurement; nonequilibrium quantum statistical physics; quantum thermodynamics; quantum measurement, entanglement and coherence; dissipation, dephasing, noise, and decoherence; quantum optics; macroscopic quantum behavior; physics of quantum computing and quantum information; mesoscopic, nano-electro-mechanical systems and nano-optical systems; spin systems and their dynamics; biological systems and molecular motors; and cosmology, gravitation and astrophysics. The lectures and discussions at the FQMT’11 conference, as well as the contributions to the related topical issue, reveal important themes for future development. The recent literature is included.

Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen, Peter D. Keefe, Václav Špička

This volume contains contributions of speakers and participants of the conference Frontiers of Quantum and Mesoscopic Thermodynamics (FQMT'11) that was held in Prague, Czech Republic at the Pyramida Hotel from 25 to 30 July 2011.FQMT'11 was a follow-up to the two previous, successful Prague conferences Frontiers of Quantum and Mesoscopic Thermodynamics 2004 (FQMT'04) and FQMT'08.As in FQMT'04 and FQMT'08, the aim of FQMT'11 was to create a bridge between the fields of modern condensed matter physics, quantum optics, statistical physics and the quickly developing field of foundations of quantum physics.

Quantum Theory from Small to Large Scales

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Manfred Salmhofer B, Vieri Mastropietro +2 more

This book collects lecture courses and seminars given at the Les Houches Summer School 2010 on ‘Quantum Theory: From Small to Large Scales’. Fundamental quantum phenomena appear on all scales, from microscopic to macroscopic. Some of the pertinent questions include the onset of decoherence, the dynamics of collective modes, the influence of external randomness, and the emergence of dissipative behaviour. Our understanding of such phenomena has been advanced by the study of model systems and by the derivation and analysis of effective dynamics for large systems and over long times. In this field, research in mathematical physics has regularly contributed results that were recognized as essential in the physics community. During the last few years, the key questions have been sharpened and progress on answering them has been particularly strong. This book reviews the state-of-the-art developments in this field and provides the necessary background for future studies.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Field Theory

Esteban Calzetta, B. L. Hu

Bringing together the key ideas from nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and powerful methodology from quantum field theory, this book captures the essence of nonequilibrium quantum field theory. Beginning with the foundational aspects of the theory, the book presents important concepts and useful techniques, discusses issues of basic interest, and shows how thermal field, linear response, kinetic theories and hydrodynamics emerge. It also illustrates how these concepts and methodology are applied to current research topics including nonequilibrium phase transitions, thermalization in relativistic heavy ion collisions, the nonequilibrium dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation, and the generation of structures from quantum fluctuations in the early Universe. Divided into five parts, with each part addressing a particular stage in the conceptual and technical development of the subject, this self-contained book is a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers in particle physics, gravitation, cosmology, atomic-optical and condensed matter physics.

Exploring the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics: Recent Developments and Open Questions

Arun Kumar

The foundations of quantum mechanics have been a subject of intense investigation and debate since the theory's inception. Recent developments in quantum technologies and theoretical frameworks have shed new light on foundational issues and raised intriguing questions about the nature of reality at the quantum level. recent advancements in our understanding of the foundational principles of quantum mechanics and discuss unresolved questions that continue to challenge our conceptual framework. Topics of interest include the measurement problem, quantum entanglement, the role of contextuality and nonlocality, interpretations of quantum theory, and the quest for a unified theory of quantum gravity. findings and ongoing debates in the field, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in the foundations of quantum mechanics and stimulate further discussion and inquiry into these fundamental questions.

Collective instabilities in light-matter interactions

Gordon R. M. Robb

This is a book chapter in the following descried book: This book collects together the lecture courses and seminars given at the Les Houches Summer School 2008 on Long-Range Interacting Systems, reviewing the state-of-the-art developments in this field and providing an essential background to future studies, all in writing that is accessible to Masters and PhD students and researchers wishing to enter this field. Leading scientists in different fields of mathematics and physics present their views on this fast growing and interdisciplinary field of research, exploring such topics as fundamental problems of probability, transport theory, equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics and cosmology, physics of plasmas, and hydrodynamics. In particular, the book examines the thermodynamic and dynamical properties of systems with long-range interactions, which have been poorly understood until recently.
