Squeezed light from a coherently pumped four-level laser

Abstract

We calculate the amplitude squeezing in the output of a coherently pumped four-level laser and compare it with that from a similar incoherently pumped laser. We find that squeezing may be considerably enhanced by pumping with coherent light. The squeezing in both types of laser is explained by a simple statistical model.

Amplitude squeezed light from a laser

Darlene L. Hart, T. A. B. Kennedy

Intensity squeezed light was successfully generated using semiconductor lasers with sub-Poissonian pumping. Control of the pumping statistics is crucial and is achieved by a large series resistor which regulates the pump current; its sub-Poissonian statistics are then transferred to the laser output. The sub-Poissonian pumping of other laser systems is not so simple, however, and their potential as squeezed states sources is apparently diminished. We consider a conventional laser incoherently pumped well above threshold, and allow for pump depletion of the ground state. In this regime, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezed amplitude fluctuations are produced.

We have calculated the amplitude squeezing in the output of several conventionally pumped multi-level lasers. We present results which show that standard laser models can produce significantly squeezed outputs in certain parameter ranges.

Squeezed light from conventionally pumped multilevel lasers

Timothy C. Ralph, Craig M. Savage

We calculate amplitude squeezing spectra for the light from a variety of conventionally pumped three- and four-level lasers. Hence we extend a recent prediction that a certain three-level laser can generate nonclassical light without the need for rigged pumping.

Amplitude squeezing and a transition from lasing with inversion to lasing without inversion in a four-level laser

Yifu Zhu, Min Xiao

The steady-state lasing and the photon statistics have been analyzed for a closed four-level-laser system pumped only by a single coherent field. The system exhibits a transition from light amplification by population inversion to light amplification by coherence. Under suitable operating conditions, the laser-intensity fluctuations may be reduced more than 50% below the shot-noise limit.

Quantum Statistics of a Squeezed-Pump Laser

Monika A. M. Marte, Helmut Ritsch, Daniel F. Walls

A laser with squeezed-pump fluctuations is found to oscillate with one of two macroscopically distinct phases. The phase diffusion rate is reduced below that of the usual laser and the output light may have amplitude fluctuations reduced below the vacuum level.

Quantum noise properties of the laser: Depleted pump regime

Darlene L. Hart, T. A. B. Kennedy

We show that a laser may generate amplitude-squeezed or antibunched light in a regime well above threshold, where depletion of the ground state by incoherent pumping is significant. Simple analytical solutions are presented to illustrate which atomic-level schemes and pumping rates are optimal.
