Effects of population pulsations on backward, nearly degenerate four-wave mixing spectroscopy and optical phase conjugation

Duncan G. Steel, Stephen Colby Rand, J. T. Remillard +1 more

We discuss the effects of population pulsations on the spectral response of backward nearly degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM). We include the effects of state-specific decay and spontaneous emission on both two-level and inverted-v-type three-level systems. We compare the results with experiments in both the gas phase and the condensed phase that show ultranarrow resonances. In addition, we examine the response in the presence of strong pump fields. We show that in a simple two-level system, the NDFWM response results in an ac-Stark splitting of the spectral response, whereas in a simple three-level system with decay to a metastable state, a single narrow resonance is observed, which broadens in the presence of strong pumps.

Photon echoes in a resonant three-level system with arbitrary level degeneracy

M. Aihara, Humio Inaba

The theoretical analysis on photon echoes is reported in a resonant multi-level system with level degeneracy, by a general consideration. With respect to the system possessing more than three-fold degeneracy, the intensity of photon echoes depends not only on the areas of the exciting optical pulses, but also on their polarization characteristics. In particular, it was found that some anomalous echoes change their intensities with the polarization directions of exciting optical pulses which have different frequencies from those of the echoes because of the coherent coupling of resonant transitions with common energy level and the interference effect of transitions through the degenerate sublevels. In the first half of this paper the general formulation on the multi-level system with arbitrary degeneracy is performed, and in the second half, the application of the general theory to some typical examples is also given.

Spectral characteristics of light wave reversal in a nondegenerate four-wave interaction in a resonant medium

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatolii A Afanas'ev, С. П. Жвавый

An investigation is made of wavefront reversal of optical radiation in a nondegenerate four-wave interaction in a resonant medium. It is shown that for a pump intensity comparable with the saturation intensity of the absorption line of the resonant medium, the reversed wave spectrum has two side peaks positioned symmetrically relative to the central peak which corresponds to a degenerate interaction. These side peaks are attributable to regions of negative absorption (amplification) of weak radiation by the resonant medium situated in a high-power field of opposite pump waves. The dependences of the magnitudes and positions of these peaks on the pump intensity can be used to control the spectral and energy characteristics of the reflected radiation. The conditions for self-excitation of a reversing system based on resonant four-wave interaction are determined. In particular, the ranges of the pump intensity and the optical density of the resonant medium in which self-excitation of the reversing system may occur, are determined for a degenerate interaction.
