Continuous resonant four-wave mixing in double-Λlevel configurations of Na_2

Sergei A Babin, U. Hinze, E. Tiemann +1 more

Efficient continuous resonant frequency mixing omega(4) = omega(1) - omega(2) + omega(3) in Na(2) has been realized. A bichromatic field (lambda(1) = 488 nm, lambda(2) = 525 nm), generated by an Ar(+)-laser-pumped Na(2) Raman laser, and radiation at lambda(3) = 655 nm from a dye laser interact resonantly with corresponding transitions X(1)Sigma(g)(+)(upsilon = 3, J = 43) ? B(1)Pi(u)(6, 43) ? X(1)Sigma(g)(+)(13, 43) ? A(1)Sigma(g)(+)(24, 44) in a test Na(2) heat pipe. For input powers of 200, 25, and 400 mW an output beam of as much as 0.2 mW at lambda(4) = 599 nm has been observed. Measured parameter dependences indicate an influence of interference effects. This is directly related to the discussion of lasing without inversion.

Vibrational branching ratios and hyperfine structure of 11BH and its suitability for laser cooling

Richard Hendricks, Darren Holland, Stefan Truppe +2 more

The simple structure of the BH molecule makes it an excellent candidate for direct laser cooling. We measure the branching ratios for the decay of the A^{1}Pi (v'=0) state to vibrational levels of the ground state, X^{1}Sigma^{+}, and find that they are exceedingly favourable for laser cooling. We verify that the branching ratio for the spin-forbidden transition to the intermediate a^{3}Pi state is inconsequentially small. We measure the frequency of the lowest rotational transition of the X state, and the hyperfine structure in the relevant levels of both the X and A states, and determine the nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole coupling constants. Our results show that, with a relatively simple laser cooling scheme, a Zeeman slower and magneto-optical trap can be used to cool, slow and trap BH molecules.

Precision measurement of the ground-state hyperfine constant for Be + 9 in a linear Paul trap via magnetically insensitive hyperfine transitions

Zhi-Yuan Ao, Wenli Bai, Qian-Yu Zhang +2 more

Direct measurements of the ground-state magnetically insensitive hyperfine transition | F = 2 , m F = 0 〉 → | F = 1 , m F = 0 〉 of Be + 9 ions have been performed using microwave-driven state transfer. The Be + 9 ions are confined and laser cooled in a linear Paul trap, forming a Coulomb crystal. The transition frequencies have been measured over a magnetic-field range of ± 0.5 mT centered at zero magnetic field and the acquired data were fitted accounting for the high-order Zeeman effect. The hyperfine constant A is determined to be − 625.008 840 ( 35 ) MHz, achieving a relative precision of 5.6 × 10 − 8 .
