Quantum Resonances and Decay of a Chaotic Fractal Repeller Observed Using Microwaves

Wentao Lu, M. Rose, Kristi Pance +1 more

The quantum resonances of classically chaotic $n$-disk geometries were studied experimentally utilizing thin 2D microwave geometries. The experiments yield the frequencies and widths of low-lying resonances, which are compared with semiclassical calculations. The long time or small energy behavior of the wave-vector autocorrelation gives information about the quantum decay rate, which is in good agreement with that obtained from classical scattering theory. The intermediate energy behavior shows nonuniversal oscillations determined by periodic orbits.

Chaotic dynamics of thermal atoms in labyrinths created by optical lattices

R Pérez-Pascual, B. M. Rodríguez-Lara, Rocío Jáuregui

We study the dynamics of non interacting thermal atoms embedded in structured optical lattices with non trivial geometry. The lattice would be generated by two counter propagating modes with parabolic cylindrical symmetry and we concentrate on the quasi conservative red detuned far-off-resonance regime. The system exhibits quasi periodic and chaotic behaviors whose probability can be controlled by varying the intensity of the beams. The spectral density of the trajectories is used as a chaos signature. An analysis of permanency times for chaotic trajectories that visit more than one potential well reveals a distribution with a long tail.

Quantum stochasticity and unimolecular decay

M. Shapiro, Mark Sheard Child

The origin of quantum stochasticity is studied via a simple model of decaying coupled anharmonic oscillators. It is shown that the decay rates of individual eigenstates, as well as mixed states, are never stochastic, even in regions where classical stochasticity exists. However, decay rates of (coherent) wave packets do show a transitional behavior, similar to the classical one, as the energy is raised. The transition is shown to arise from a competition between two rates, the dissociation rate, depending on the wave function amplitudes, and the dephasing rate, depending on the energy spectrum, and to occur when the dephasing becomes faster than the dissociation. It is suggested that only properties which depend simultaneously on the wave function-amplitude and the energy spectrum can display this transitional behavior. It is also shown that strong coupling is not a necessary condition for stochasticity.
