Abstract

We analyzed the influence of the thermal motion from the environment on the internal states of trapped ions and the center-of-mass mode phonon using a Green's-function method. The deviation of the internal states and the variational rules of the phonon number with different trap parameters changing with the temperature are given. The upper limit of the temperature at which the gate operation can be performed safely is convenient to be found out according to different error correction capability.

Temperature Effect on Mølmer and Sørensen Model: A Two-Time Green's Function Method

Wei Li, Hongmin Zhao, Jia-tih Lin

Using two-time Green's function we analyze the effect of temperature on the Mølmer and Sørensen (M–S) model of cold trapped ion quantum computer. A formula for the deviation of an internal state from its ground state is derived in the first-order approximation. The fluctuation of internal state caused by thermal motion is also discussed. The deviation of internal state when different trap parameters changes with the temperature are given too. The upper temperature limit for regular quantum computation is obtained and our result is in agreement with experiment.

A New Approach to Measurement of Heating Rate of Trapped Ions

You-Yang Xu, Zhou Fei, Yi Xie

We propose a new scheme to estimate the heating rate of trapped ions in thermal states. By applying a controlled-U gate between the internal and the motional states of one of the trapped ions, we could obtain the mean phonon number from the population of the internal state of the ion. The imperfection due to fluctuations of the relevant parameters in real experiments is considered and we analyze the experimental feasibility of our scheme with sophisticated ion trap techniques.

Mode-resolved thermometry of a trapped ion with deep learning

Yi Tao, Ting Chen, Hongyang Wang +5 more

In a trapped-ion system, accurate thermometry of ions is crucial for precisely evaluating the system state and performing quantum operations. However, when the motional state of a single ion is far away from the ground state, the spatial dimensionality of the phonon state sharply increases. Then it is difficult to realize accurate and mode-resolved thermometry with existing methods. In this work, we apply deep learning to the thermometry of a trapped ion and propose an efficient and mode-resolved method for accurately estimating large mean phonon numbers. We have also conducted experimental verification based on a self-developed surface trap. The result has shown the significant accuracy and efficiency of the method for thermometry of a single ion with large mean phonon numbers. The mode-resolved feature of our method makes it better applied to the characterization of system parameters, such as evaluating cooling effectiveness and analyzing surface trap noise. Our trained neural network model can be easily extended to other experimental setups and parameter ranges without modification of the experimental setups.

Temperature Effect on Cirac and Zoller Model Using Two-Time Green's Function

Wei Li, Zhao Hong-min, Jia-tih Lin

Using the two-time Green's function method, we analyze the temperature effect on the famous Cirac and Zoller model. Formulas for the average number of different mode phonons and the deviation of its internal state from its ground state are derived. The influence of the internal state energy and trap frequency on the number of phonons is also discussed. The upper limit of temperature for regular quantum computation in the Cirac and Zoller model is obtained.

We investigate the evolution of the ionic states with the temperature in the presence of laser ion interaction in a linear radio frequency trap The expectation value of ions' excited states with different laser detuning frequencies Δ is plotted against the temperature, and the upper limit of the temperature at which the logical gate operations could be carried out reliably is given Our result is quantitatively in agreement with that of the experiment

Cooling the Collective Motion of Trapped Ions to Initialize a Quantum Register

B. E. King, C. S. Wood, Christopher J. Myatt +5 more

We report preparation in the ground state of collective modes of motion of two trapped ${}^{9}{\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ ions. This is a crucial step towards realizing quantum logic gates which can entangle the ions' internal electronic states. We find that heating of the modes of relative ion motion is substantially suppressed relative to that of the center-of-mass modes, suggesting the importance of these modes in future experiments.
