Depletion of superfluid fraction in the quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas

Abstract

A theory is presented for the depletion of superfluid density in a low-temperature Bose gas adsorbed on a surface. Longitudinal excitations are treated in a Bogoliubov type of approximation. Transverse modes are found to contribute significantly if the excitation energy of adatoms normal to the surface is small.

NORMAL-MODE ANALYSIS OF A SUPERFLUID MODEL

G. C. Knollman

An investigation is performed using normal-mode analysis on a quantum mechanical cell model whose general features are representative of 4He at low temperatures. Both random-phase and self-consistent field approximations are invoked. A Bogoliubov-type excitation energy spectrum is derived for the interacting Bose system, and the amplitudes of the system quasi-particles are obtained; these quantities are expressed in terms of zero-momentum occupation number. A relationship giving the temperature-dependent fractional occupation of the single-particle zero-momentum level is established, and special attention is devoted to the temperature extreme near absolute zero. An estimate is made of the zero-temperature sound speed corresponding to the special case of phonon excitation given by the model in low momentum. It is shown that at a critical temperature for which the zero-momentum occupation is depleted, the quasi-particles indeed become normal Bose particles. In first approximation, this critical temperature is akin in form to that obtained in treatments of ideal boson systems.

Finite-temperature superfluid depletion of disordered Bose gases

Cord Axel Müller

Abstract At zero temperature, homogeneous interacting Bose-condensed fluids are entirely superfluid, with remarkable transport properties. A non-superfluid, normal component is induced by finite temperatures and spatial inhomogeneity, the combined effects of which are rather intriguing, and difficult to describe quantitatively. By inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory, applicable to weakly interacting condensed Bose gases in static external potentials with arbitrary spatial correlations, we calculate the normal fluid density via the transverse current–current correlation. We obtain finite-temperature disorder corrections to the normal fraction known since Laudau’s seminal two-fluid theory, using diagrammatic perturbation theory for systems of any dimensionality, with closed analytical expressions to leading, quadratic order in disorder strength.

Low-Temperature Properties of the Interacting Bose System

Naomi Shohno

The low-temperature properties of the interacting Bose system at high density are investigated under the random phase approximation and the self-consistent Hartree approximation based on the “normal-mode analysis”. To treat rigorously the tempereture-dependent “depletion” effect of the particles in the zero-momentum level, a new approach is proposed. As a result, the critical temperature, Tc, at which the zero-momentum particles disappear is determined. In the region below Tc, the temperature-dependent energy-spectrum of the quasi-particles, which has at the zero-temperature an intimate connection with that of Bogoliubov, is obtained, and the property of superfluidity which disappears at Tc is discussed. It is shown that the quasi-particles are transformed into the normal Bose particles at Tc, and the temperature-dependent energy-spectrum of the normal particles in the region above Tc is determined. It is noteworthy that the phase transition of the second-order occurs at Tc. In so far as the interaction gives the real and positive value for the energy-spectrum of both the quasi-particles and normal particles, the results above hold true, independent of the magnitude and particular shape of interaction. Some remarks are made on the hard-sphere interaction and on the interaction among the quasi-particles which seems necessary for the investigateions of the intermediate-density Bose system.

Disordered bosons: Condensate and excitations

Kanwal G. Singh, Daniel S. Rokhsar

The disordered Bose-Hubbard model is studied numerically within the Bogoliubov approximation. First, the spatially varying condensate wave function in the presence of disorder is found by solving a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Using the Bogoliubov approximation to find the excitations above this condensate, we calculate the condensate fraction, superfluid density, and density of states for a two-dimensional disordered system. These results are compared with experiments done with $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ adsorbed in porous media.

Collective excitations of a dilute Bose gas at finite temperature: time dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Nadia Guebli

Abstract Using the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach, where the condensate is coupled with the thermal cloud and the anomalous density, we study the equilibrium and the dynamical properties of three-dimensional quantum-degenerate Bose gas at finite temperature. Effects of the anomalous correlations on the condensed fraction and the critical temperature are discussed. In uniform Bose gas, useful expressions for the Bogoliubov excitations spectrum, the first and second sound, the condensate depletion and the superfluid fraction are derived. Our results are tested by comparing the findings computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present also a systematic investigation of the collective modes of a Bose condensate confined in an external trap. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results. We show in particular that our theory is capable of explaining the so-called anomalous behavior of the m = 0 mode.

Effect of long-range 1/r interaction on thermal and quantum depletion of a dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas

Moulud Tamaddonpur, H. Yavari, Zahra Saeidi

The depletion of a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) dipolar Bose condensed gas in the presence of both contact and long-range 1/r interactions is investigated in the framework of Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. When the characteristic wavelength of a mode is much larger than the trap size, the dipole-dipole (DD) interaction can be treated as a contact interaction and in the low momentum limit the long-range nature of the 1/r interaction has the dominant contribution and leads to the nonlinear (nonphononic) dispersion relation. We will show that quantum depletion is temperature independent and is determined by the contact, DD and longrange 1/r coupling constants (ɛdd = gd/g and C). The the quantum depletion is affected by long-range 1/r interaction and at large momentum limits the momentum dependence of quantum depletion unaffected by 1/r interaction.
