Abstract

Scattering of a matter-wave single soliton and two-soliton molecule incident on the modified Pöschl-Teller potential well has been studied by means of a collective coordinate approach and numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Despite the attractive nature of the potential we observe total reflection of solitons in particular ranges of parameters, which is the signature of quantum behavior displayed by the matter-wave soliton. For other particular sets of parameters unscathed transmission of solitons and molecules through the potential well has been identified. A specific feature of this process is that the soliton passing through the potential well overtakes the freely propagating counterpart; i.e., its mean position appears to have been advanced in time. An array of such potentials makes the "time advance" effect even more pronounced, so that scattered solitons move well ahead of nonscattered ones, fully preserving their initial shape and velocity. A possible application of the obtained results is pointed out.

Scattering of a two-soliton molecule by attractive potential well

Two anti-phase bright solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate can form stable bound states, known as soliton molecules. In this paper we study the scattering of a twosoliton molecule by external potential, using the simplest and analytically tractable Gaussian potential barriers and wells, in one spatial dimension. Theoretical model is based on the variational approximation for the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). At sufficiently low velocity of the incident molecule we observe quantum reflection from the potential well. Predictions of the mathematical model are compared with numerical simulations of the GPE, and good qualitative agreement between them is demonstrated.

Scattering of a two-soliton molecule by Gaussian potentials in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

Abstract Two bright solitons in a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) can form stable bound states, known as soliton molecules. In this paper we study the scattering of a two-soliton molecule by external potential, using the simplest and analytically tractable Gaussian potential barriers and wells, in one spatial dimension. Collisions of soliton molecules with single solitons are investigated, the latter playing the role of a localized defect. Due to the long-range character of dipolar forces solitons interact with each other even though their waveforms do not appreciably overlap. This is an essentially different feature of dipolar solitons compared to their counterparts in BECs with contact atomic interactions. The result of scattering significantly depends on the potential’s strength and velocity of collision. For weak potentials and/or low velocity the molecule preserves its coherence, meantime the internal modes are excited. Scattering by strong potentials at moderately high velocity ends up with dissociation of the molecule. The theoretical model is based on the variational approximation for the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Predictions of the mathematical model are compared with numerical simulations of the nonlocal GPE, and good qualitative agreement between them is demonstrated.

Scattering of Matter Wave Solitons on Localized Potentials

Sidse Damgaard Hansen, Nicolai Gayle Nygaard, Klaus Mølmer

We study the reflection and transmission properties of matter wave solitons impinging on localized scattering potentials in one spatial dimension. By mean field analysis we identify regimes where the solitons behave more like waves or more like particles as a result of the interplay between the dispersive wave propagation and the attractive interactions between the atoms. For a bright soliton propagating together with a dark soliton void in a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate, we find different reflection and transmission properties of the dark and the bright components.

Enhanced quantum reflection of matter-wave solitons

Chaohong Lee, J Brand

Matter-wave bright solitons are predicted to reflect from a purely attractive potential well although they are macroscopic objects with classical particle-like properties. The non-classical reflection occurs at small velocities and a pronounced switching to almost perfect transmission above a critical velocity is found, caused by nonlinear mean-field interactions. Full numerical results from the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are complimented by a two-mode variational calculation to explain the predicted effect, which can be used for velocity filtering of solitons. The experimental realization with laser-induced potentials or two-component Bose-Einstein condensates is suggested.
