Control of laser induced continuum structure in the vicinity of autoionizing states

Abstract

The first observation of laser induced continuum structure on autoionizing states in both third harmonic generation and ionization is reported for atomic Ca. The possibility of controlling the shape of the induced structure, exhibiting a transition from a dip to a peak, through the laser field intensities is demonstrated. Theoretical time dependent analysis including atomic parameters verifies that the experimental observations originate from laser field dependent coherent interactions.

Laser-induced modification of a structured continuum observed in ionization and harmonic generation

O. Faucher, Yun Shao, Dimitrios Charalambidis +1 more

Experimental investigations of the laser-induced continuum structure in the vicinity of autoionizing states (AIS's) of Ca are reported for both ionization and third-harmonic generation. The shape of the induced structures is shown to be strongly affected by the presence of the AIS's, as well as exhibiting a detuning- and laser-intensity-dependent transition from a window resonance dip to a peak. The observed modification of the continuum is discussed in terms of interfering excitation channels.

Laser-induced autoionizing and continuum structures: Line-shape study in the presence of continuum-continuum transitions

Stefano Cavalieri, R. Eramo, Roberto Buffa +1 more

We present a theoretical study of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, performed with the aim of deriving predictions on the effect of continuum-continuum transitions on the resonance line shape. The model, developed as an extension of models introduced for the description of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, on one hand, and for above-threshold ionization, on the other hand, provides quantitative predictions. For specific atomic systems, the line shapes of the structures are shown not to be affected by continuum-continuum transitions, in contrast with previously reported results.

Coherent control of atomic photoionization

Stefano Cavalieri, R. Eramo, Luca Fini +1 more

Coherent control provides a quantum interference based method for controlling atomic and molecular dynamics. We report two experimental observations of different ways to achieve such a control in atomic photoionization continuum. One is the photoionization of sodium atoms, initially prepared in the 3P1/2 excited state, by a non resonant three-photon interaction with 1064-nm laser light and by a one-photon interaction with the third-harmonic field, at 355 nm. Interference between the two transition paths allows the control of the total ionization rate by varying the relative phase of the laser fields. The second experiment is the observation of the modification of the ionization continua of xenon through laser induced continuum structure (LICS). The multiphoton radiative decay of the xenon ground state into the two electronic continua, that correspond to the two fine structure levels of the ground state of the xenon ion, is varied by electromagnetically embedding a bound state of the atom into the two continua. Both experiments are performed on an atomic beam apparatus which uses a time-of-flight spectrometer for energy analyzing the emitted photoelectrons.

Spectroscopy of laser-induced autoionizing nonlinear resonances in atomic systems

Lubomir I. Pavlov, V V Kovachev

Efficient harmonic generation at laser-induced autoionizing state in continuum, were observed for the first time by our laboratory [1,2,3]. In this paper, nonlinear frequency mixing in alkali metal vapors at induced continuum structure in Na, are studied in detail. Besides, measurement of nonlinear optical susceptibility at induced autoionizing resonance, is performed. Tunable ultraviolet radiations by four-photon processes near induced resonances are obtained. Estimations of the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinearities, are estimated. We will specially note, that the resonant photoabsorption of ions is experimentally investigated since it gives information about the autoionizing states, which is impossible to obtain on the base only of the emission spectra. We use also laser inducing for obtaining of powerful radiation source in VUV. Thus, many actual problems as the selective impact on matter, laser photochemistry and laser isotope separation are connected directly with the induced autoionizing nonlinear resonances. The main interest is to control the spectral characteristics of continuum. The discrete level from the continuum structure leads to appearance of asymmetrical autoionizing resonance onto the background of the broad-band absorption line.

Third-harmonic generation from a laser-induced autoionizing level

Burke Ritchie

A nonperturbative theory is presented for the gas polarization induced by two lasers. The first laser ionizes Li(2s) by three-photon absorption, with the first two photons in resonance with the 3d level. A second laser stimulates recombination into the 3s level, thereby inducing an autoionizing-like structure in the continuum. It is found that the polarization (and hence possibly third-harmonic generation) is enhanced near the induced resonance.
