Abstract

A switch is proposed for controlling the subluminal and superluminal light propagation through the triple coupled quantum dots system. The steady-state and transient behavior of the absorption and the dispersion of a probe pulse through a triple quantum dots molecule are investigated. We demonstrate that the group velocity of a light pulse can be controlled from subluminal to superluminal or vice versa by controlling the rates of incoherent pumping and tunneling between electronic levels. Switching time is calculated by discussing the dependency of optical transient properties on the incoherent pumping and inter-dot tunneling rates. We introduce three controlling parameters that make it possible to control the wave propagation electrically or even optically in such coupled quantum dot systems.

Propagation of a laser pulse and electro-optic switch in a GaAs/AlGaAs quadruple-coupled quantum dot molecule nanostructure

Abstract Based on a GaAs/AlGaAs quadruple-coupled quantum dot heterostructure, an optical switch for controlling superluminal and subluminal light propagation is suggested. The transient and steady state behaviour of the absorption and dispersion of a probe pulse laser field through a quadruple quantum dot molecule are studied. We show that the group velocity of a light pulse can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal, or vice versa, by controlling the tunnelling rates between the quantum dots. The required switching time is calculated and we find it to be about 8 ps. We also investigated a method for the all-optical switching of probe field absorption from a large amount to nearly zero just by applying an incoherent pumping field. We estimated the required switching time for this case to be between 3 and 14 ps.

Electrical and optical control of optical gain in a coupled triple quantum dot system operating in telecommunication window

Mohammad Reza Mehmannavaz, Hamed Sattari

We investigate the light amplification and gain without inversion (GWI) in triple quantum dot molecules in both steady-state and transient state. We demonstrate that the light amplification and GWI of a light pulse can be controlled through the rates of the incoherent pumping and tunneling between electronic levels. The required switching times for switching of a light pulse from absorption to gain and vice versa is then discussed. We obtain switching time at about 40 ps, which resembles a high-speed optical switch in nanostructure. The proposed approach in QDMs may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science.

Slow and fast light propagation and controllable switch at λ = 1.55 µ m in a photonic crystal with a defect layer doped by an InAs/GaAs quintuple-coupled quantum dot molecule nanostructure

Jalil Shiri

Abstract The transient and steady-state behavior of the probe absorption and dispersion at 1.55 µ m wavelength through a 1D photonic crystal with a defect layer doped by an InAs/GaAs quintuple quantum dot molecule nanostructure are discussed. We show that the group velocity of a light pulse can be controlled just by controlling the rate of incoherent pumping and interdot tunneling. We also investigate the electro-optical switching time of light propagation from subluminal to superluminal or vice versa. The time required to switch from subluminal to superluminal light propagation is found to be in the range 17–34 ps. Such controllable optical properties in a 1D photonic crystal with a defect layer may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics, solid-state quantum information science and systems dealing with signal processing.

We propose using a nanostructure with quantum dots to switch light pulses between superluminal and subluminal propagation. Additionally, by adjusting tunneling rates and incoherent pumping field, the speed of light pulses can be controlled with a 5 ps switching time.

Pulse propagation through a dielectric slab doped with a triple quantum dot nanostructure

Rajab Nasehi, Mohammad Mahmoudi, Mostafa Sahrai

Abstract The propagation of an electromagnetic pulse through a dielectric slab doped with a triple quantum dot (QD) nanostructure has been discussed in the presence of electron tunneling. We include the effect of an incoherent pump field in the transmission and reflection of a pulse in a triple QD. It is shown that the reflected and transmitted pulses can be switched from subluminal to superluminal light propagation by changing either the rate of the incoherent pump field or the inter-dot tunneling between QD1, QD2 and QD3 in a slab. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the inter-dot tunnel coupling can significantly affect the behavior of optical bistability (OB) and optical multi-stability (OM) in a dielectric slab. The obtained results can be used for the development of new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing the switching process.

Efficient manipulation of a probe pulse for achieving optical storage and switch in triple coupled quantum dots

Nuo Ba, Jin-You Fei, Dongfei Li +5 more

We investigated the steady optical properties of the triple quantum dots, which obtain a tunneling-induced effect by using the external electric field. Our numerical results shown that the electromagnetically induced transparency can be achieved via the tunneling-induced effect. In addition, we examined the propagation dynamics of a probe field in this system and found that the probe field group velocities and their absorption were related to the tunneling coupling intensities. This finding allowed us to control the probe field to obtain ultraslow group velocities and a tunable optical switch. Finally, using this scheme it was possible to store and release the probe field by modulating the tunneling coupling sequences.
