Geometric phase in relativistic quantum theory

Abstract

The geometric phase in Dirac relativistic quantum theory is obtained in this paper. It is slightly different from Berry's nonrelativistic result, and satisfies the invariance of the general Lorenz transformation in the relativistic quantum theory. This relativistic geometric phase can reduce to Berry's expression when we adopt the nonrelativistic approximation.

Berry Phase for Spins of Relativistic Electrons

Berry phase is a very general concept. It is applied here to families of solutions of the Dirac equation with different values of spin. The value of the Berry phase in the spin space is given by the same expression as was found before in the momentum space.

Properties of geometric phase under Galilean transformation

Zheng Ying-Hong, Tong Chen, Ping Wang +2 more

Properties of geometric phase under Galilean transformation are investigated within a general framework. We found that the geometric phase in the system commonly met with in the laboratory is Galilean invariant. However, this is not always true for general non-relativistic quantum systems. The physical origins of the frame dependence of geometric phase is discussed in detail. We emphasize that the change of geometric phase caused by Galilean boosts does not destroy the results of measurement for two-state interference. It is consistent with the general constraint of Galilean invariance on a non-relativistic quantum system.

Geometric phase for Dirac Hamiltonian under gravitational fields in the nonrelativistic regime

Tanuman Ghosh, Banibrata N. Mukhopadhyay

We show the appearance of geometric phase in a Dirac particle traversing in nonrelativistic limit in a time-independent gravitational field. This turns out to be similar to the one originally described as a geometric phase in magnetic fields. We explore the geometric phase in the Kerr and Schwarzschild geometries, which have significant astrophysical implications. Nevertheless, the work can be extended to any spacetime background including that of time-dependent. In the Kerr background, i.e. around a rotating black hole, geometric phase reveals both the Aharonov–Bohm effect and Pancharatnam–Berry phase. However, in a Schwarzschild geometry, i.e. around a nonrotating black hole, only the latter emerges. We expect that our assertions can be validated in both the strong gravity scenarios, like the spacetime around black holes, and weak gravity environment around Earth.

Gauge- and Galilei-invariant Geometric Phases

Guido Bacciagaluppi

Neither geometric phases nor differences in geometric phases are generally invariant under time-dependent unitary transformations (unlike differences in total phases), in particular under local gauge transformations and Galilei transformations. (This was pointed out originally by Aharonov and Anandan, and in the case of Galilei transformations has recently been shown explicitly by Sjoeqvist, Brown and Carlsen.) In this paper, I introduce a phase, related to the standard geometric phase, for which phase differences are both gauge- and Galilei-invariant, and, indeed, invariant under transformations to linearly accelerated coordinate systems. I discuss in what sense this phase can also be viewed as geometric, what its relation is to earlier proposals for making geometric phases invariant under gauge or Galilei transformations, and what is its classical analogue. I finally apply this invariant phase to Berry's derivation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Berry and geometrical phase induced by torsion field

Salvatore Capozzıello, Gaetano Lambiase, C. Stornaiolo

The geometric phase, connected to the Berry phase, for Dirac particles is calculated in the framework of theories of gravity with torsion. It turns out that torsion source may be interpreted a sort of curvature in the projective space of states.
