Abstract

A general method is developed for analysing the evolution of nonclassical light in complex two-mode optical systems where linear and nonlinear processes with quadratic Hamiltonians can take place simultaneously or successively. Analytic expressions are derived for the output Wigner function and the output photon number distribution for a general coherent-state superposition input that can approximate any quantum state of light with a high degree of accuracy. As an example, the evolution of amplitude squeezed light is analysed in a nonlinear coupler with degenerate and nondegenerate parametric amplification. It is shown that all-optical switching can be realized in this system.

Nonclassical effects in nondegenerate optical parametric symmetric coupler

Mohamed S. Abdalla, Faisal A. A. El-Orany, Jan Peřina

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism nonclassical effects of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler containing nondegenerate parametric amplification have been studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the out going fields from the coupler. Particular attention has been paid to two mode squeezing, second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator for coherent state. Furthermore, regimes for generation and transmission of squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light are found.

Nonclassical light at exceptional points of a quantum PT -symmetric two-mode system

Jan Peřina, A. Lukš, Joanna K. Kalaga +2 more

A two-mode optical parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric system, with gain and damping, described by a quantum quadratic Hamiltonian with additional small Kerr-like nonlinear terms, is analyzed from the point of view of nonclassical-light generation. Two kinds of stationary states with different types of (in)stability are revealed. Properties of one of these are related to the presence of semiclassical exceptional points, i.e., exotic degeneracies of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the studied system without quantum jumps. The evolution of the logarithmic negativity, principal squeezing variances, and sub-shot-noise photon-number correlations, considered as entanglement and nonclassicality quantifiers, is analyzed in the approximation of linear-operator corrections to the classical solution. Suitable conditions for nonclassical-light generation are identified in the oscillatory regime, especially at and around exceptional points that considerably enhance the nonlinear interaction and, thus, the nonclassicality of the generated light. The role of quantum fluctuations, inevitably accompanying attenuation and amplification in the evolution of quantum states, is elucidated. The evolution of the system is analyzed for different initial conditions.

An efficient framework for quantum dynamics driven by nonclassical light

Sheng-Wen Li, Zeyang Liao, Mao-Xin Liu

Understanding quantum system dynamics driven by nonclassical light pulses is challenging, particularly for general light states with large photon numbers. Here we introduce an efficient framework that makes this task tractable. By introducing a pulse-shaped P-representation, the exact quantum evolution is decomposed into a mixture of many independent quasi-classical branches, each governed by a standard master equation with a classical pulse which can be solved efficiently. As an illustration, for a two-level system interacting with an exponential pulse, we first find out the exact analytical solutions to the Bloch equations in each quasi-classical branch, and then by taking proper P-function average over all branches, the full system dynamics driven by nonclassical light pulses is analytically obtained. For the one-photon and two-photon cases, our method well reproduces the previous exact results either analytically or numerically. Crucially, our approach scales efficiently to more complex light states (Fock, thermal, squeezed vacuum states) with large photon numbers ($N\sim 100$). We further provide a clear physical interpretation how the system dynamics is influenced through the high-order optical coherence of the nonclassical pulses. This work provides a unified and computationally efficient route and a useful starting point to explore more complex quantum dynamics driven by nonclassical light in quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Nonclassical light in nonlinear optical couplers

Jan Peřina

Statistical properties of light generated in nonlinear optical couplers are discussed. Methods suitable for the description of non-classical properties of light are mentioned; special attention is paid to generalized superposition of coherent fields and noise. Regimes suitable for non-classical light generation in various types of nonlinear couplers based on second-harmonic and second- subharmonic generation, optical parametric processes, Kerr effect as well as Raman and Brillouin processes are analyzed. Special attention is devoted to the generation of light with sub-Poissonian statistics, squeezed light, and light in purely quantum states. Role of real effects like damping of optical fields and phase mismatches is also discussed.

Structure of multiphoton quantum optics. II. Bipartite systems, physical processes, and heterodyne squeezed states

Fabio Dell’Anno, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

Extending the scheme developed for a single mode of the electromagnetic field in the preceding paper [F. Dell'Anno, S. De Siena, and F. Illuminati, Phys. Rev. A 69, 033812 (2004)], we introduce two-mode nonlinear canonical transformations depending on two heterodyne mixing angles. They are defined in terms of Hermitian nonlinear functions that realize heterodyne superpositions of conjugate quadratures of bipartite systems. The canonical transformations diagonalize a class of Hamiltonians describing nondegenerate and degenerate multiphoton processes. We determine the coherent states associated with the canonical transformations, which generalize the nondegenerate two-photon squeezed states. Such heterodyne multiphoton squeezed states are defined as the simultaneous eigenstates of the transformed, coupled annihilation operators. They are generated by nonlinear unitary evolutions acting on two-mode squeezed states. They are non-Gaussian, highly nonclassical, entangled states. For a quadratic nonlinearity the heterodyne multiphoton squeezed states define two-mode cubic phase states. The statistical properties of these states can be widely adjusted by tuning the heterodyne mixing angles, the phases of the nonlinear couplings, as well as the strength of the nonlinearity. For quadratic nonlinearity, we study the higher-order contributions to the susceptibility in nonlinear media and we suggest possible experimental realizations of multiphoton conversion processes generating the cubic-phase heterodyne squeezed states.
