Nonclassical character of states exhibiting no squeezing or sub-Poissonian statistics

Abstract

A criterion is evolved for testing the nonclassical character of the field even if it does not exhibit squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics. An explicit example of a state of the field is given to demonstrate the utility of this criterion. The production of such a state by state-reduction methods is also shown. This criterion also enables us to study the nonclassical character of the Schr\"odinger cat state in regions where it does not exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics.

Nonclassical states of the radiation field

Mark S. Hillery

A nonclassical state of the electromagnetic field is a state whose P representation is not non-negative definite.1 Examples of such states are squeezed states and states with sub-Poissonian statistics. These states demonstrate the necessity of the quantum mechanical description of the radiation field.

Non-classicalities exhibited by the superposition of Schrödinger’s cat state with the vacuum of the optical field

Karunesh Kumar Mishra, Dhiraj Yadav, Gaurav K. Shukla +1 more

Abstract Superposition of two coherent states, the Schrodinger’s cat state, can exhibit different nonclassical properties having foundational applications in quantum information processing. We consider the ‘superposition of Schrodinger’s cat state with the vacuum state (SCVS)’ of the optical field. We discuss different witness of nonclassicality properties such as lower- and higher-order squeezing (viz., squeezing, Hong & Mandel’s fourth-order squeezing, amplitude-squared squeezing) and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Further, we discuss the negativity of the Wigner function of SCVS indicating the nonclassicality of the state under investigation. We find that the vacuum state contribution in SCVS exhibits different nonclassicalities under some conditions stronger where the nonclassicalities exhibited by the state without vacuum state contribution are weaker.

Nonclassicality of two-mode states of the quantized radiation field

Adrian Alexandrescu, Diethard H. Schiller

The second-order coherence (correlation) functions are used to investigate the classicality (nonclassicality) of quantum states, as defined by the existence (nonexistence) of a positive definite (Glauber-Sudarshan) P-representation. We study nonclassical behavior as revealed by sub-Poissonian statistics and/or violation of the classical Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. The two-mode states considered include Bell-like superpositions of Fock states, Schrödinger cat states and the ideal squeezed states.

Nonclassical properties of correlated two-mode Schrödinger cat states

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We generalize the concept of Schr\"odinger cat states to macroscopic superpositions of two pairs coherent states. We show that these states can have various nonclassical features such as the violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics, and squeezing. We propose schemes to generate these states.

Nonclassicality of states and measurements by breaking classical bounds on statistics

́Angel Rivas, Alfredo Luis

We derive exceedingly simple practical procedures revealing the quantum nature of states and measurements by the violation of classical upper bounds on the statistics of arbitrary measurements. Data analysis is minimum, and definite conclusions are obtained without evaluation of moments or any other more sophisticated procedures. These nonclassical tests are independent of other typical quantum signatures such as sub-Poissonian statistics, quadrature squeezing, or oscillatory statistics. This approach can be equally well applied to very diverse situations such as single- and two-mode fields, observables with continuous and discrete spectra, finite- and infinite-dimensional systems, and ideal and noisy measurements.

Nonclassical measure of nonclassical properties

Kisik Kim

The nonclassical measures of nonclassical properties of radiation fields are proposed in parallel with those of the nonclassical states. It is shown that the nonclassical measures of sub-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezing are bounded below $1/2$ and their physical implications are discussed in comparison with the nonclassical measures of states.
