Abstract

We have calculated the exact ground-state phase diagrams of the spin-3/2 Ising model using the method that was proposed and applied to the spin-1 Ising model by Dublenych (2005 Phys. Rev. B 71 012411). The calculated, exact ground-state phase diagrams on the diatomic and triangular lattices with the nearest-neighbor (NN) interaction have been presented in this paper. We have obtained seven and 15 topologically different ground-state phase diagrams for J >0 and J <0, respectively, on the diatomic lattice and have found the conditions for the existence of uniform and intermediate or non-uniform phases. We have also constructed the exact ground-state phase diagrams of the model on the triangular lattice and found 20 and 59 fundamental phase diagrams for J >0 and J <0, respectively, the conditions for the existence of uniform and intermediate phases have also been found.

PHASE DIAGRAMS OF 3-MATRIX MODEL

Kenji Fukazawa, Kenji Hamada, Haru-Tada Sato

We study the phase diagram of the 3-matrix model. This model corresponds to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model on a random surface. The BEG model has parameters J and K which are the spin and the lattice-gas coupling respectively. If K = 0, it is the usual tri-critical Ising model. If K/J = 3, this model becomes the 3-state Potts model. These models are solved in the context of the Coulomb gas representation. The intermediate region K/J = 1 is equivalent to the 3-matrix chain model and we can solve it exactly using the orthogonal polynomial method. We find the 3rd order critical line on which the spin ordering phase transition occurs. This line ends at the 4th order critical point which corresponds to the tri-critical point of the BEG model. The phase diagram is quite similar to that of the BEG model on a regular lattice.

Finite-size scaling analysis of theS=1Ising model on the triangular lattice

Joseph B. Collins, Per Arne Rikvold, E. T. Gawlinski

We study the S=1 Ising model, equivalent to the three-state lattice-gas model, with nearest-neighbor, pairwise interactions on a two-dimensional, triangular lattice. We pay particular attention to the antiferromagnetic phase diagrams. We show its relation to other well-studied models (S=(1/2 Ising, Blume-Capel, Blume-Emery-Griffiths), classify the ground states, and calculate finite-temperature phase diagrams using transfer matrices and finite-size scaling for infinite strips of three and six sites width. The phase diagrams are quite complicated, with surfaces of first- and second-order transitions that intersect along lines of multicritical points of various kinds, providing a rich laboratory for studying a number of first-order phase transitions, critical and multicritical phenomena within the framework of one single model.

Ground state of an Ising-type spin-1/2 chain with competing interactions

Takashi Tonegawa, H. Matsumoto, Toshiya Hikihara +1 more

The ground state of an Ising-type spin-1/2 chain with ferromagnetic bond-alternating nearest-neighbor and anti-ferromagnetic uniform next-nearest-neighbor interactions is studied by using the exact-diagonalization method and the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The Hamiltonian describing the system is expressed as H = – Σi h2i–1,2i – J1 Σi h2i,2i+1 + J2 Σi hi,i+2 with hi,i' = γ(Six Si'x + Siy Si'y) + Siz Si'z, where J1 0, J2 0, and 1 > γ 0. Special attention is paid to the ground-state phase diagram on the J1 versus J2 plane for a given value of γ. The phase diagram is composed of the ferromagnetic, intermediate, and up-up-down-down phases, the intermediate phase being characterized by its magnetization, which takes finite but unsaturated values. The phase diagram obtained for γ = 0.5 shows that the region of the intermediate phase for a given value of J1 is widest when J1 = 1.0 and becomes narrower rather rapidly as J1 decreases or increases from 1.0. The J2-dependence of the ground-state magnetization for γ = 0.5 and J1 = 0.85 is also discussed. PACS Nos.: 75.10Jm, 75.40Mg

Ising Model with Antiferromagnetic Next-Nearest-Neighbor Coupling. II. Ground States and Phase Diagrams

J. Stephenson, Donald D. Betts

The critical values of the ratio of interaction energies at which the ordering of spins in the ground state is indeterminate (and probably ${T}_{c}=0$) are calculated exactly for a variety of Ising lattices with antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling, and for anisotropic nearest-neighbor coupling. Using these results and the exact two-dimensional solutions, the general dependence of the critical point on interaction ratio is sketched. The complex case of the antiferromagnetic fcc is reconsidered.

Mixed Spin-2 and Spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) Model on the Bethe Lattice

Mounirou Karimou, R. A. A. Yessoufou, Félix Hontinfinde

The mixed spin-2 and spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) Ising ferrimagnetic system is studied by the Bethe lattice approach. The ground-state phase diagram is constructed. The influence of the crystal-field and the biquadratic interactions among neighboring spins on the thermal behaviors of the system is singled out. The system displays very rich critical behaviors with the existence of tricritical points. Compensation points where the global magnetization of the system vanishes have been detected for appropriate values of the system parameters.

Numerical simulations study of a spin-1 Blume–Emery–Griffiths model on a square lattice

Luciana Melina Luque, S. A. Grigera, Ezequiel Vicente Albano

Abstract We use the Monte Carlo simulation technique to study the critical behavior of a three-state spin model, with bilinear and biquadratic nearest-neighbor interactions, known as the Blume–Emery–Griffiths model (BEG), in a square lattice. In order to characterize this model, we study the phase diagram, in which we identify three different phases: ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and quadrupolar, the later with one sublattice filled with spins and the other with vacancies. We perform our studies by using two algorithms: Metropolis update (MU) and Wang–Landau (WL). The critical scaling behavior of the model is complementary studied by applying results obtained by using both algorithms, while tricritical points and the tricritical scaling behavior is analyzed by means of WL measuring the joint density of states and using the method of field mixing in conjunction with finite-size scaling. Furthermore, motivated by the decoupling between spins observed within the quadrupolar phase, we further generalize the BEG model in order to study the behavior of the system by adding a next nearest neighbour (NNN) interaction between spins. We found that by increasing the strength of the (ferromagnetic) NNN interaction, a new ferromagnetic phase takes over that contains both quadrupolar and ferromagnetic order.
