Abstract

We investigate the properties of a condensed-matter system modeled as an ideal atomic Fermi gas with a synthetic spin-orbit coupling. The coupling has been taken to be isotropic and possessing an infinitely degenerate ground state manifold given by a sphere in momentum space is 3D analogue of the Rashba-type. It is found that the chemical potential of such a system exhibits an anomalous behavior typically akin to dimensional reduction. The study shows that some other properties also get affected by the SO coupling and the effects could be attributed to be thermodynamic signatures of Majorana fermions.

Thermodynamic signatures for topological phase transitions to Majorana and Weyl superfluids in ultracold Fermi gases

Kangjun Seo, Chuanwei Zhang, Sumanta Tewari

We discuss the thermodynamic signatures for the topological phase transitions into Majorana and Weyl superfluid phases in ultracold Fermi gases in two and three dimensions (2D and 3D) in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman field. We analyze the thermodynamic properties exhibiting the distinct nature of the topological phase transitions linked with the Majorana fermions (2D Fermi gas) and Weyl fermions (3D Fermi gas) which can be observed experimentally, including pressure, chemical potential, isothermal compressibility, entropy, and specific heat, as a function of the interaction and the Zeeman field at both zero and finite temperatures. We conclude that among the various thermodynamic quantities, the isothermal compressibility and the chemical potential as functions of the artificial Zeeman field have the strongest signatures of the topological transitions in both two and three dimensions.

Ground-state properties of dilute Bose systems with synthetic dispersion laws

Eugene B. Kolomeisky

Experimental advances in synthesizing spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic Bose gases promise to create single-particle dispersion laws featuring energy minima that are degenerate on a ring or a sphere in momentum space. We show that for arbitrary space dimensionality the ground-state properties of a dilute system of spin-orbit-coupled Bose particles with such dispersion and short-range repulsive interactions are universal: the chemical potential exhibits a quadratic dependence on the particle density as found in a one-dimensional free Fermi gas.

BCS-BEC crossover in spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional Fermi gases

Gang Chen, Ming Gong, Chuanwei Zhang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atoms has generated much interest in the physics of spin-orbit-coupled degenerate Fermi gases. Although recently the BCS-BEC crossover in three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases has been intensively studied, the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) crossover physics has remained unexplored. In this paper, we investigate, both numerically and analytically, the BCS-BEC crossover physics in 2D degenerate Fermi gases in the presence of the Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling. We derive the mean-field gap and atom-number equations suitable for 2D spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases and solve them numerically and self-consistently, from which the dependence of the ground-state properties (chemical potential, superfluid pairing gap, ground-state energy per atom) on the system parameters (e.g., binding energy, spin-orbit-coupling strength) is obtained. Furthermore, we derive analytical expressions for these ground-state quantities, which agree well with our numerical results within a broad parameter region. Such analytical expressions also agree qualitatively with previous numerical results for 3D spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases, where analytical results are lacking. We show that, with increasing spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength, the chemical potential is shifted by a constant determined by the SOC strength. The superfluid pairing gap is enhanced significantly in the BCS limit for strong SOC, but increases only slightly in the BEC limit.

BCS-BEC crossover in 3D Fermi gases with spherical spin-orbit coupling

Lianyi He, Xu-Guang Huang

We present a systematic theoretical study of the BCS-BEC crossover problem in 3D atomic Fermi gases at zero temperature with a spherical spin-orbit coupling which can be realized by a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field coupled to fermions. Our investigations are based on the path integral formalism which is a powerful theoretical scheme for the study of the properties of bound state, the superfluid ground state, and the collective excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover. At large spin-orbit coupling, the system enters the BEC state of a novel type of bound state (referred to as rashbon) which possesses a non-trivial effective mass. Analytical results and interesting universal behaviors for various physical quantities at large spin-orbit coupling are obtained. Our theoretical predictions can be tested in future experiments of cold Fermi gases with 3D spherical spin-orbit coupling.

Three-dimensional spin–orbit coupled Fermi gases: Fulde–Ferrell pairing, Majorana fermions, Weyl fermions, and gapless topological superfluidity

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu, Han Pu

We theoretically investigate a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin–orbit coupling in the presence of both out-of-plane and in-plane Zeeman fields. We show that, driven by a sufficiently large Zeeman field, either out-of-plane or in-plane, the superfluid phase of this system exhibits a number of interesting features, including inhomogeneous Fulde–Ferrell pairing, gapped or gapless topological order, and exotic quasi-particle excitations known as Weyl fermions that have linear energy dispersions in momentum space (i.e., massless Dirac fermions). The topological superfluid phase can have either four or two topologically protected Weyl nodes. We present the phase diagrams at both zero and finite temperatures and discuss the possibility of their observation in an atomic Fermi gas with synthetic spin–orbit coupling. In this context, topological superfluid phase with an imperfect Rashba spin–orbit coupling is also studied.
