Room-temperature grating-based morphological hole burning in Sm^2+-doped glass powders

Koji Fujita, Yoshihiro Ohashi, Kazuyuki Hirao

We have observed grating-based morphological hole burning in Sm2+-doped glass powders at room temperature. When photobleaching on the 4f(6)-4f(5)5d transition of Sm2+ is combined with multiple light scattering, holes are produced in frequency and wave-vector domains. The hole profile depends on the amount of light absorption of Sm2+; it sharpens as the absorption decreases. The variation of the hole shape is explained theoretically based on a diffusion approximation.

Observation of erasable holographic gratings at room temperature in Eu^3+-doped glasses

Edward G. Behrens, Frederic M. Durville, Richard C. Powell

The characteristics of four-wave mixing signals were studied in Eu(3+)-doped glasses. When the Eu(3+) ions were resonantly excited, two types of laser-induced grating were formed: a transient population grating associated with the excited Eu(3+) ions and a holographic grating, which was permanent at room temperature but could be erased either thermally or optically.
