Exact studies of ground and excited states of one-dimensional δ-interacting Fermi gases in the BCS–BEC crossover

Abstract

We propose an eigenfunction expansion method to solve the integral equations raised by one-dimensional δ-interaction integrable models. Based on this method, the crossover from BCS superfluid of singlet pairs to BEC of molecules is exactly analyzed in both ground and excited states in terms of the momentum distributions. In the exact one-dimensional model, we derive the expressions and calculate the dependence of several physical quantities on the inverse of the dimensionless coupling parameter γ. These physical quantities include the ground state energy, chemical potential, momentum cutoff, charge velocity, excitation energy, excitation momentum, spin gap and spin velocity. Our exact results agree well with previous numerical results. In the practical quasi-one-dimensional model, we apply the method to the ground state and the results give a clear BCS–BEC crossover picture.

Theoretical results of strongly interacting quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gases in the BCS–BEC crossover

Zhou Li, Hang Dong, Yong-li Ma

We present a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) Bose–Fermi mixture model of strongly interacting Fermi gases through the confinement-induced resonance (CIR) to describe 3D fermions trapped in a Q1D geometry along the z axis. Based on the 1D Bethe ansatz method, we analyse the ground and excited states of the Q1D system and derive their integral equations in terms of the momentum distributions in the thermodynamic limit. By applying a Legendre expansion method, the crossover from the BCS superfluid of singlet pairs to the BEC of molecules is calculated in the ground and excited states. We then obtain the dependence of several physical quantities on the inverse of a dimensionless coupling parameter a ⊥ / a with a dimensionless density parameter na ⊥ of Q1D where is the transverse size and ω ⊥ is the 2D harmonic trap frequency in the xy plane. Our results can go back to the smooth 1D crossover when na ⊥ → 0. The theoretical results quantitatively show that the strongly coupling Fermi gas in the Q1D behaves as a Bose–Fermi mixture near the crossover.

Exact analysis of a δ-function spin-1/2 attractive Fermi gas with arbitrary polarization

Toshiaki Iida, Miki Wadati

The ground state of a one-dimensional δ-function attractive spin-1/2 fermions is studied by the nested Bethe ansatz method. Explicitly, the Gaudin integral equation for the system is solved in the form of power series with arbitrary spin polarization. The first few terms of the asymptotic expansions for both strong and weak coupling cases are calculated analytically. The physical quantities, such as the ground state energy and the chemical potentials, are expressed in terms of the dimensionless coupling constant and the polarization , where c is the coupling constant and are the number densities of the spin-up (down) particles. While in the limiting case P = 1, the system consists of spinless free fermions, the other limit P = 0 describes the BCS–BEC crossover in one dimension. As a function of P , the evolution is continuous and smooth.

Unitarity Schrödinger Equation and Ground State Properties of the Finite Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gases in a BCS-BEC Crossover

Zhang Wen-Yuan, Wang Cheng-tao, Ma Yong-Li

On the basis of quantum hydrodynamical equations we derive a unitarity Schrödinger equation of a finite trapped superfluid Fermi gas valid in the whole interaction regime from BCS superfluid to BEC. This equation is just the Ginzburg–Laudau-type equation for the fermionic Cooper pairs in the BCS side, the Gross–Pitaevskii-type equation for the bosonic dimers in the BEC side, and a unitarity equation for a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid in the unitarity limit. By taking a modified Gauss-like trial wave function, we solve the unitarity Schrödinger equation, calculate the energy, chemical potential, sizes and profiles of the ground-state condensate, and discuss the properties of the ground state in the entire BCS-BEC crossover regimes.

Exactly Solvable Model of the BCS-BEC Crossover

Jean-Noël Fuchs, Alessio Recati, W. Zwerger

We discuss an integrable model of interacting fermions in one dimension that allows a complete description of the crossover from a BCS- to a Bose-like superfluid. This model bridges the Gaudin-Yang model of attractive spin 1/2 fermions to the Lieb-Liniger model of repulsive bosons. Using a geometric resonance in the one-dimensional scattering length, the inverse coupling constant varies from -infinity to +infinity while the system evolves from a BCS-like state through a Tonks-Girardeau gas to a weakly interacting Bose gas of dimers. We study the ground state energy, the elementary density and spin excitations, and the correlation functions. An experimental realization with cold atoms of such a one-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover is proposed.

BCS-to-BEC crossover from the exact BCS solution

Gerardo Ortíz, J. Dukelsky

The BCS-to-BEC crossover, as well as the nature of Cooper pairs, in superconducting and Fermi superfluid media is studied from the exact ground state wave function of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. As the strength of the interaction increases, the ground state continuously evolves from a mixed system of quasifree fermions and pair resonances (BCS), to pair resonances and quasibound molecules (pseudogap), and finally to a system of quasibound molecules (BEC). A single unified scenario arises where the Cooper-pair wave function has a unique functional form. Several exact analytic expressions such as the binding energy and condensate fraction are derived. We compare our results with recent experiments in ultracold atomic Fermi gases.

Quantum fluctuations in the superfluid state of the BCS-BEC crossover

Roberto B. Diener, Rajdeep Sensarma, Mohit Randeria

We determine the effects of quantum fluctuations about the $T=0$ mean-field solution of the BCS-BEC crossover in a dilute Fermi gas using the functional integral method. These fluctuations are described in terms of the zero-point motion of collective modes and the virtual scattering of gapped quasiparticles. We calculate their effects on various measurable properties, including chemical potential, ground-state energy, the gap, the speed of sound and the Landau critical velocity. At unitarity, we find excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo and experimental results. In the BCS limit, we show analytically that we obtain Fermi liquid interaction corrections to thermodynamics including the Hartree shift. In the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit, we show that the theory leads to an approximate description of the reduction of the scattering length for bosonic molecules and also obtain quantum depletion of the Lee-Yang form. At the end of the paper, we describe a method to include feedback of quantum fluctuations into the gap equation, and discuss the problems of self-consistent calculations in satisfying Goldstone's theorem and obtaining ultraviolet finite results at unitarity.
