Abstract

We show that the Markov approximation cannot be generally applied for composite systems interacting with thermal reservoir even if characteristic time of the system is much larger than reservoir correlation time.

Quantum Master Equations for Composite Systems: Is Born–Markov Approximation Really Valid?

Masatoshi Nakatani, Tetsuo Ogawa

Markovian quantum master equations are generally thought to satisfy the following three conditions: (i) they describe the dynamics of time scales that are larger than the reservoir correlation time scale, (ii) these stationary solutions give the thermal equilibrium states with a reservoir, and (iii) they can be written in the Lindblad form. In fact, for single systems such as a single harmonic oscillator and a single two-level system, Markovian quantum master equations satisfying all these conditions can be obtained. However, for composite systems, which consist of more than one subsystem coupled with each other, such equations have not been obtained thus far. In this study, we found that we cannot use the Born–Markov approximation for obtaining quantum master equations for composite systems in the strong-coupling regime, no matter how short the reservoir correlation time is.

Non-Markovian master equation for a damped driven two-state system

P Haikka

We present a detailed microscopic derivation for a non-Markovian master equation for a driven two-state system interacting with a general structured reservoir. The master equation is derived using the time-convolutionless projection operator technique in the limit of weak coupling between the two-state quantum system and its environment. We briefly discuss the Markov approximation, the secular approximation and their validity.

Expansion formulas for quantum master equations including initial correlation

Sachiko Kitajima, Masashi Ban, Fumiaki Shibata

Abstract The quantum master equation is considered for an open system initially correlated with a thermal reservoir, where the initial correlation is created by an initial preparation of a relevant system. Perturbative expansion formulas for quantum master equations are systematically derived with respect to a system-reservoir interaction. The result is applied to the dispersive JC model and the spin-boson model. In the second order approximation, the generalized Bloch equations for a spin system are found. It is shown that the effect of the initial correlation between the spin and the thermal reservoir is equivalent to an effective external field applied to the spin system.
