FINITE GEOMETRIES IN QUANTUM THEORY: FROM GALOIS (FIELDS) TO HJELMSLEV (RINGS)

Abstract

Geometries over Galois fields (and related finite combinatorial structures/algebras) have recently been recognized to play an ever-increasing role in quantum theory, especially when addressing properties of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). The purpose of this contribution is to show that completely new vistas open up if we consider a generalized class of finite (projective) geometries, viz. those defined over Galois rings and/or other finite Hjelmslev rings. The case is illustrated by demonstrating that the basic combinatorial properties of a complete set of MUBs of a q-dimensional Hilbert space [Formula: see text], q = prwith p being a prime and r a positive integer, are qualitatively mimicked by the configuration of points lying on a proper conic in a projective Hjelmslev plane defined over a Galois ring of characteristic p2and rank r. The q vectors of a basis of [Formula: see text] correspond to the q points of a (so-called) neighbour class and the q + 1 MUBs answer to the total number of (pairwise disjoint) neighbour classes on the conic. Although this remarkable analogy is still established at the level of cardinalities only, we currently work on constructing an explicit mapping by associating a MUB to each neighbour class of the points of the conic and a state vector of this MUB to a particular point of the class. Further research in this direction may prove to be of great relevance for many areas of quantum information theory, in particular for quantum information processing.

Mutually unbiased phase states, phase uncertainties, and Gauss sums

Michel R. P. Planat, Haret Codratian Rosu

Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), which are such that the inner product between two vectors in different orthogonal bases is a constant equal to 1/sqrt{d), with d the dimension of the finite Hilbert space, are becoming more and more studied for applications such as quantum tomography and cryptography, and in relation to entangled states and to the Heisenberg-Weil group of quantum optics. Complete sets of MUBs of cardinality d+1 have been derived for prime power dimensions d=p^m using the tools of abstract algebra. Presumably, for non prime dimensions the cardinality is much less. Here we reinterpret MUBs as quantum phase states, i.e. as eigenvectors of Hermitean phase operators generalizing those introduced by Pegg & Barnett in 1989. We relate MUB states to additive characters of Galois fields (in odd characteristic p) and to Galois rings (in characteristic 2). Quantum Fourier transforms of the components in vectors of the bases define a more general class of MUBs with multiplicative characters and additive ones altogether. We investigate the complementary properties of the above phase operator with respect to the number operator. We also study the phase probability distribution and variance for general pure quantum electromagnetic states and find them to be related to the Gauss sums, which are sums over all elements of the field (or of the ring) of the product of multiplicative and additive characters. Finally, we relate the concepts of mutual unbiasedness and maximal entanglement. This allows to use well studied algebraic concepts as efficient tools in the study of entanglement and its information aspects

A Survey of Finite Algebraic Geometrical Structures Underlying Mutually Unbiased Quantum Measurements

Michel R. P. Planat, Haret Codratian Rosu, Serge Perrine +1 more

The basic methods of constructing the sets of mutually unbiased bases in the Hilbert space of an arbitrary finite dimension are reviewed and an emerging link between them is outlined. It is shown that these methods employ a wide range of important mathematical concepts like, e.g., Fourier transforms, Galois fields and rings, finite and related projective geometries, and entanglement, to mention a few. Some applications of the theory to quantum information tasks are also mentioned. KEY WORDS: mutually unbiased bases; d-dimensional Hilbert space; Galois fields and rings; maximally entangled states.

Galois algebras of squeezed quantum phase states

Michel R. P. Planat, Метод Санига

Coding, transmission and recovery of quantum states with high security and efficiency, and with as low fluctuations as possible, is the main goal of quantum information protocols and their proper technical implementations. The paper deals with this topic, focusing on the quantum states related to Galois algebras. We first review the constructions of complete sets of mutually unbiased bases in a Hilbert space of dimension q = p m , with p being a prime and m a positive integer, employing the properties of Galois fields F q (for p >2) and/or Galois rings of characteristic four R 4 m (for p = 2). We then discuss the Gauss sums and their role in describing quantum phase fluctuations. Finally, we examine an intricate connection between the concepts of mutual unbiasedness and maximal entanglement.

New Constructions of Approximately Mutually Unbiased Bases by Character Sums over Galois Rings

You Gao, Ming-Yue XIE, Gang Wang +1 more

Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are widely used in quantum information processing and play an important role in quantum cryptography, quantum state tomography and communications. It's difficult to construct MUBs and remains unknown whether complete MUBs exist for any non prime power. Therefore, researchers have proposed the solution to construct approximately mutually unbiased bases (AMUBs) by weakening the inner product conditions. This paper constructs q AMUBs of ℂq, (q+1) AMUBs of ℂq-1 and q AMUBs of ℂq-1 by using character sums over Galois rings and finite fields, where q is a power of a prime. The first construction of q AMUBs of ℂq is new which illustrates K AMUBs of ℂK can be achieved. The second and third constructions in this paper include the partial results about AMUBs constructed by W. Wang et al. in [9].

Quantum phase uncertainty in mutually unbiased measurements and Gauss sums
