Abstract

We calculate two-dimensional (2D) photon-echo and double-quantum-coherence spectra of two coupled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots at various distances, taking into account electron, hole, and exciton hopping. Signatures of direct and indirect excitons in two-exciton resonances are revealed. At short distances, electron delocalization contributes to the creation of new biexcitonic peaks, and dipole-dipole interactions shift the two-exciton energies.

2D optical photon echo spectroscopy of a self‐assembled quantum dot

Benjamin Philipp Fingerhut, Marten Richter, Jun‐Wei Luo +2 more

Simulations of two dimensional coherent photon echo (2D‐PE) spectra of self‐assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QD) in different charged states are presented revealing the coupling between the individual mono‐exciton transitions and contributions of bi‐excitons . The information about the states is crucial for various application scenarios of QDs, like e.g. highly efficient solar cells. The simulations rely on a microscopic description of the electronic structure by high‐level atomistic many‐body pseudopotential calculations. It is shown that asymmetric diagonal peak shapes and double cross‐peaks are the result of state contributions to the PE signal by analyzing the contributions of the individual pathways excited state emission, ground state bleach and excited state absorption. The results show that from the detuned and contributions the bi‐exciton binding energies of the manifold are revealed in 2D‐PE signals.

Optical nonlinearity induced by exciton-biexciton coherent effects in InGaAs quantum dots

Hideki Gotoh, Hidehiko Kamada, Hidetoshi Nakano +3 more

We report on large optical nonlinear effects induced by coherent interactions between excitons and biexcitons in quantum dots. The absorption spectra in an exciton–biexciton system are measured in InGaAs quantum dots by using single dot spectroscopy. The spectra exhibit unusual shapes that have a transparent region under a strong excitation condition. A pump–probe measurement ensures that the exciton state is erased by a quantum interference effect with exciton and biexciton photoabsorption processes. These results suggest that optical functions such as electromagnetically induced transparency are feasible with excitons and biexcitons in quantum dots.

Exciton absorption properties of coherently coupled exciton-biexciton systems in quantum dots

Hideki Gotoh, Hidehiko Kamada, Tadashi Saitoh +2 more

Exciton-biexciton coherent coupling effects are examined in semiconductor quantum dots. The exciton absorption spectrum is measured with the microphotoluminescence excitation technique in a single InGaAs quantum dot. The spectrum changes from a Lorenztian-type line shape to an unusual dip-shaped line shape with increasing excitation intensities in a higher exciton state where there is a large oscillator strength between the exciton and biexciton states. The intensity dependence of the dip energy width clearly indicates that coherent Rabi oscillation occurs between the exciton and biexciton states. The absorption properties with excitation light of different polarizations show that the dip-shaped spectra only appear when there is a large biexciton state population with linear polarization. A theoretical analysis undertaken with the density matrix method agrees well with experimental results. This agreement reveals that exciton-biexciton coherent interactions lead to unusual absorption spectra and contribute crucially to the optical properties of quantum dots. The exciton-biexciton coherent effects provide a scheme for controlling four distinguishable states, which can be applied to a demonstration of quantum gate operations.

Coherent excitonic interactions in an InGaAs asymmetric double quantum well are studied using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Density matrix calculations reveal that an excitation-induced shift is the dominant many-body interaction responsible for the coupling.

Coherent Excitonic Coupling in an Asymmetric Double InGaAs Quantum Well Arises from Many-Body Effects

Gaël Nardin, Galan Moody, Rohan Singh +4 more

We study an asymmetric double InGaAs quantum well using optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. The collection of zero-quantum, one-quantum, and two-quantum two-dimensional spectra provides a unique and comprehensive picture of the double well coherent optical response. Coherent and incoherent contributions to the coupling between the two quantum well excitons are clearly separated. An excellent agreement with density matrix calculations reveals that coherent interwell coupling originates from many-body interactions.

Two-dimensional spectroscopy of semiconductor quantum wells

Hebin Li, Bachana Lomsadze, Galan Moody +2 more

Abstract Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy of semiconductor quantum wells is discussed in this chapter. The chapter starts with an introduction of semiconductor optics. The signatures of many-body interaction and correlation are revealed as spectral features in 2D spectra including one-, double-, and multi-quantum 2D spectra. Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy can also be used to study the coupling in coupled quantum wells and exciton-polaritons in microcavities.
