Abstract

We show that for conformally invariant two-dimensional systems, the amplitude of the finite-size corrections to the free energy of an infinitely long strip of width L at criticality is linearly related to the conformal anomaly number c, for various boundary conditions. The result is confirmed by renormalization-group arguments and numerical calculations. It is also related to the magnitude of the Casimir effect in an interacting one-dimensional field theory, and to the low-temperature specific heat in quantum chains.

Universal term in the free energy at a critical point and the conformal anomaly

Ian K. Affleck

We show that the leading finite-size correction to lnZ for a two-dimensional system at a conformally invariant critical point on a strip of length L width \ensuremath{\beta}(\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\ll}L) is (\ensuremath{\pi}/6)c(L/\ensuremath{\beta}), where c is the conformal anomaly. Equivalently, the leading low-temperature correction to the free energy of a one-dimensional quantum system is -(\ensuremath{\pi}/6)cL(kT${)}^{2}$\ensuremath{\Elzxh}v, where v is the effective ``velocity of light.'' The latter formula is used to check recently derived critical theories of spin-s quantum chains against Bethe-Ansatz solutions.

Finite-size corrections to the energy spectra of gapless one-dimensional systems in the presence of boundaries

Yifan Liu, Haruki Shimizu, Atsushi Ueda +1 more

We present the finite-size scaling theory of one-dimensional quantum critical systems in the presence of boundaries. While the finite-size spectrum in the conformal limit, namely of a conformal field theory with conformally invariant boundary conditions, is related to the dimensions of boundary operators by Cardy, the actual spectra of lattice models are affected by both bulk and boundary perturbations and contain non-universal boundary energies. We obtain a general expression of the finite-size energy levels in the presence of bulk and boundary perturbations. In particular, a generic boundary perturbation related to the energy-momentum tensor gives rise to a renormalization of the effective system size. We verify our field-theory formulation by comparing the results with the exact solution of the critical transverse-field Ising chain and with accurate numerical results on the critical three-state Potts chain obtained by Density-Matrix Renormalization Group.

Exact Critical Casimir Amplitude of Anisotropic Systems from Conformal Field Theory and Self-Similarity of Finite-Size Scaling Functions in d≥2 Dimensions

V. Dohm, Stefan Weßel

The exact critical Casimir amplitude is derived for anisotropic systems within the d=2 Ising universality class by combining conformal field theory with anisotropic φ^{4} theory. Explicit results are presented for the general anisotropic scalar φ^{4} model and for the fully anisotropic triangular-lattice Ising model in finite rectangular and infinite strip geometries with periodic boundary conditions. These results demonstrate the validity of multiparameter universality for confined anisotropic systems and the nonuniversality of the critical Casimir amplitude. We find an unexpected complex form of self-similarity of the anisotropy effects near the instability where weak anisotropy breaks down. This can be traced back to the property of modular invariance of isotropic conformal field theory for d=2. More generally, for d>2 we predict the existence of self-similar structures of the finite-size scaling functions of O(n)-symmetric systems with planar anisotropies and periodic boundary conditions both in the critical region for n≥1 as well as in the Goldstone-dominated low-temperature region for n≥2.

Density profiles in confined critical systems and conformal invariance

Theodore W. Burkhardt, Tianyou Xue

The conformal-invariance approach is extended to two-dimensional critical systems with mixed ab boundary conditions. The profiles 〈\ensuremath{\varphi}(r)${\mathrm{〉}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$ of the magnetization and the energy density in Ising and Q-state Potts strips with +- and fixed-free boundary conditions are derived. The profile of an arbritrary operator degenerate at level 2 is expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. The universal amplitudes ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$ of the Casimir force and the Fisher--de Gennes distant-wall correction to the profile satisfy ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$=-4\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{x}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}$${\mathit{c}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$. Here ${\mathit{x}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}$ is the scaling dimension of \ensuremath{\varphi}(r) and c is the central charge.

Domain boundary energies in finite regions at 2D criticality via conformal field theory

Peter H. Kleban, I Vassileva

By use of conformal field theory, the authors calculate universal results for the energies of curved domain boundaries at two-dimensional critical points in circular and rectangular regions. This work extends the theory of finite-size effects at criticality, complementing previous exact results for the energies of domain boundaries in infinite strips.

Universal finite-size scaling around tricriticality between topologically ordered, symmetry-protected topological, and trivial phases

Ke Wang, Tigran Sedrakyan

Quantum one-dimensional criticality with conformal invariance is known to be characterized by conformal field theory with the inherent central charge ($c$), and universal finite-size amplitudes. Here, the authors demonstrate that around a quantum criticality with $c$=\textonehalf{} and two Majorana boundary modes, the symmetry-breaking effect modifies the finite-size amplitudes from a universal constant to be a universal function of an emergent scale. This finding provides a new perspective to study the interplay of topology and quantum criticality.
