Block spins and chirality in the frustrated Heisenberg model onkagome´ and triangular lattices

Abstract

The spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model (HM) is investigated using a block-spin perturbation approach on kagome$aai--- and triangular lattices. In both cases, after coarse graining the triangles on the original lattice and truncation of the Hilbert space to the triangular ground-state subspace, HM reduces to an effective model on a triangular lattice in terms of the triangular-block degrees of freedom, viz. the spin and the chirality quantum numbers. The chirality part of the effective Hamiltonian captures the essential difference between the two lattices. It is seen that chiral-ordered variational states have high energies compared to the other variational states.

Block spins and Chirality in Heisenberg model on Kagome and triangular lattices

It is seen that simple eigenstates can be constructed for the effective model whose energies serve as upper bounds on the exact ground state energy of HM, and chiral-ordered variational states have high energies compared to the other variational states.

Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids on Frustrated Lattices: Analytical Theory and Exact Constraints

Khamis Obaidelah

We present a comprehensive analytical theory of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) on the kagome lattice with Heisenberg exchange J1, next-nearest-neighbor exchange J2, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction D, and scalar spin chirality interaction λ. The work contains three principal contributions. First, we derive new mean-field analytic relations connecting the chiral interaction λ to the spinon gap, low-temperature thermodynamics, and thermal Hall response, with explicit spin-S dependence and generalization across kagome, triangular, and honeycomb lattices. The central result is Δspinon ∝ S³λ/J12 with lattice-dependent prefactors derived from self-consistent mean-field equations. Second, we derive a controlled effective model by projecting the kagome Hamiltonian onto the triangle-doublet subspace, obtaining an effective spin-chirality model on the triangular lattice with complex-valued interactions arising from the C3 symmetry of the chirality eigenstates. We compute all matrix elements of the effective spin operator in the chirality basis and characterize the inter-chirality coupling mediated by shared lattice sites. Third, we provide a rigorous map of obstructions to exact analytical solutions, systematically examining eight classes of proof techniques and identifying the precise mathematical reason each fails for the kagome Hamiltonian. The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem provides the single rigorous exact result: any gapped ground state on the kagome lattice with spin-1/2 per site must exhibit topological order. All other results are classified by derivation category with explicit uncertainty quantification. Chiral entanglement in triangular lattice models

Dimitris I. Tsomokos, Juan José García‐Ripoll, Nigel R. Cooper +1 more

We consider the low-energy spectrum of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ two-dimensional triangular lattice models subject to a ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and a three spin chiral interaction of variable strength. Initially, we consider quasi-one-dimensional ladder systems of various geometries. Analytical results are derived that yield the behavior of the ground states, their energies, and the transition points. The entanglement properties of the ground state of these models are examined and we find that the entanglement depends on the lattice geometry due to frustration effects. To this end, the chirality of a given quantum state is used as a witness of tripartite entanglement. Finally, the two-dimensional model is investigated numerically by means of exact diagonalization and indications are presented that the low energy sector is a chiral spin liquid.

Frustrated spin- 1 2 Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain: Dimerization and mapping to a spin-orbital Kugel-Khomskii model

S. K. Ghosh, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Manoranjan Kumar

We investigate the quantum phases of a frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 model Hamiltonian on a kagom\'e-strip chain (KSC), a one-dimensional analog of the kagom\'e lattice, and construct its phase diagram in an extended exchange-parameter space. The isolated unit cell of this lattice comprises of five spin-1/2 particles, giving rise to several types of magnetic ground states in a unit cell: a spin-$3/2$ state as well as spin-$1/2$ states with and without additional degeneracies. We explore the ground-state properties of the fully connected thermodynamic system using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, identifying several distinct quantum phases. All but one of the phases exhibit gapless spin excitations. The exception is a dimerized spin-gapped phase that covers a large part of the phase diagram and includes the uniformly exchange coupled system. We argue that this phase can be understood by perturbing around the limit of decoupled unit cells where each unit cell has six degenerate ground states. We use degenerate perturbation theory to obtain an effective Hamiltonian, a Kugel-Khomskii model with an anisotropic spin-one orbital degree of freedom, which helps explain the origin of dimerization.

Variational Monte Carlo study of chiral spin liquid in quantum antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

Wen-Jun Hu, Shou-Shu Gong, D. N. Sheng

By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor (${J}_{1}$), second-neighbor (${J}_{2}$), and additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ on the triangular lattice. In the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model with $0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105(R) (2015) and Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403(R) (2015)] find a possible gapped spin liquid with the signal of a competition between a chiral and a ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid. Motivated by the DMRG results, we consider the chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ as a perturbation for this nonmagnetic phase. We find that with growing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$, the gapless U(1) Dirac spin liquid, which has the best variational energy for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}=0$, exhibits the energy instability towards a gapped spin liquid with nontrivial magnetic fluxes and nonzero chiral order. We calculate topological Chern number and ground-state degeneracy, both of which identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with fractionalized Chern number $C=1/2$ and twofold topological degeneracy. Our results indicate a positive direction to stabilize a chiral spin liquid near the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model.
