Integrability of the ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall edge states

Yichen Hu, Biao Lian

We investigate the homogeneous chiral edge theory of the filling ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall state, which is parameterized by a Luttinger liquid velocity matrix and an electron tunneling amplitude (ignoring irrelevant terms). We identify two solvable cases: one case where the theory gives two free chiral boson modes, and the other case where the theory yields one free charge 2e3 chiral fermion and two free chiral Bogoliubov (Majorana) fermions. For generic parameters, the energy spectrum from our exact diagonalization shows Poisson level spacing statistics (LSS) in each conserved charge and momentum sector, indicating the existence of hidden conserved quantities and the possibility that the generic edge theory of the ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall state is integrable. We further show that a global symmetry preserving irrelevant nonlinear kinetic term will lead to the transition of LSS from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson at high energies. This further supports the possibility that the model without irrelevant terms is integrable.

Conformal field theory description of mesoscopic phenomena in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Lachezar S. Georgiev

We give a universal description of the mesoscopic effects occurring in fractional quantum Hall disks due to the Aharonov-Bohm flux threading the system. The analysis is based on the exact treatment of the flux within the conformal field theory framework and is relevant for all fractional quantum Hall states whose edge states CFTs are known. As an example we apply this scheme for the parafermion Hall states and extract the main characteristics of the low- and high- temperature asymptotic behavior of the persistent currents.

Fractional Charge Revealed in Computer Simulations of Resonant Tunneling in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

Eugene V. Tsiper

The concept of fractional charge is central to the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Here I use exact diagonalization as well as configuration space renormalization to study finite clusters which are large enough to contain two independent edges. I analyze the conditions of resonant tunneling between the two edges. The "computer experiment" reveals a periodic sequence of resonant tunneling events consistent with the experimentally observed fractional quantization of electric charge in units of e/3 and e/5.
