ATOMIC POPULATION OSCILLATIONS FOR A BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATE IN A SYMMETRIC THREE-WELL POTENTIAL

Abstract

By developing a three-mode approximation, we derive dynamical equations governing a condensate in a symmetric three-well potential. Based on the dynamical equations, we numerically simulate the dynamical properties of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a symmetric three-well potential. It is shown that, for the zero-phase mode, atomic population in each well oscillates periodically with the amplitude dependent on the initial conditions, and there may exist a critical initial distribution. However, for the π-phase mode, it is possible for the system to exhibit a set of behaviors directly dependent on the ratio between the nonlinearity induced by the atom-atom interactions and the coupling of neighboring wells.

Dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a three-well potential

R. Paredes

We study the dynamics of an ultracold interacting Bose-Einstein gas confined in a one-dimensional potential composed of three symmetrical wells. We numerically solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the N -particle Hamiltonian for N = 50, 150, 500, 1000. We demonstrate that the quantum phase transition from a superfluid (SF) to a Mott insulator (MI) phase in the three-well potential depends on the strength of the interactions among the particles, the total number of particles, and the confining potential in which the particles move. We discuss the appearance of population revivals as a function of time and find that, even in the case when the interaction strength among the particles is very small, its effect has the consequence that the system never returns to the initial condition. A stationary state for long times is observed in the SF phase, while the particle population in each well remains almost equal to the initial condition in the MI phase.

Critical State of Quantum Tunneling of Bose-Einstein Condensate in Symmetric Double Well

Zhenwei Li

In the framework of semi-classical theory, the author plots and analyzes the dynamical behaviors of Bose-Einstein condensate when initial phase difference is 0 and π,respectively,in a symmetric trap in weak interaction, without damping effects and periodical modulation. For the system is conservative, atoms never stop random oscillations in critical states instead of stopping automatically oscillations with damping effects.Atomic oscillations display properties of both Josephson oscillation and self-trapping oscillation in critical states between these two kinds of oscillation, and two kinds of properties of self-trapping oscillation in critical states between π phase mode self-trapping oscillation and running phase mode self-trapping oscillation.

Stability and Chaos of Two Coupled Bose–Einstein Condensates with Three-Body Interaction

Ya Li, Wenhua Hai

We study the dynamics of two Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) tunnel-coupled by a double-well potential. A real three-body interaction term is considered and a two-mode approximation is used to derive two coupled equations, which describe the relative population and relative phase. By solving the equations and analyzing the stability of the system, we find the stable stationary solutions for a constant atomic scattering length. When a periodically time-varying scattering length is applied, Melnikov analysis and numerical calculation demonstrate the existence of chaotic behavior and the dependence of chaos on the three-body interaction parameters.

Nonlinear dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Mei Zhang, Li You

We examine the nonlinear dynamical behavior of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Considering a condensate with large number of atoms, such that it can be described using the mean field theory, we separate the spinor dynamics from the spatial dynamics under the single-mode approximation. We limit ourselves to certain initial conditions under which the spatial mode is frozen so that we can focus on the spinor dynamics only. Identifying collective spin variables of our system, we derive the corresponding nonlinear equations of motion for them. Employing standard stability analysis, we find and characterize fixed points of the system. For a wide range of physical parameters such as tunneling strength and non-linear interactions, as well as for various initial preparations of the system, we identify qualitatively different dynamical regimes possible in the system. In particular, complete and incomplete oscillations of spin variables between quantum wells are found. We also show that by bringing some fixed points close to each other in the phase space of the system, it is possible to induce amplitude modulation to those otherwise regular tunneling oscillations.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation in an asymmetric double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Haibin Li

Josephson effect of Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential is an obvious manifestation of macroscopic quantum coherence. Most of researches focus on the symmetric double-well potential. In this work, we investigate the dynamic of Bose-Einstein condensates in an asymmetric double-well potential by using two-mode theory and computer simulation. In the absence of the interaction between atoms, the dynamic equation of condensate can be solved analytically. The amplitude as a function of energy difference of two wells is obtained. We can find that the change of energy difference will lead to the different dynamic behaviors of condensate. If the energy difference is relatively large, the condensate will primarily occupy the well that is occupied more than the other well at the beginning time. It is interesting that such a trap phenomenon is not dependent on the position of the high energy potential well nor the position of low energy potential well. If the energy difference becomes small, the tunneling and oscillation of condensate will be enhanced. When the interaction between atoms is present, our numerical calculations show that as the nonlinear interaction increases, the dynamic behavior of condensate exhibits different characteristics, such as trapping in a well, enhancing the tunneling and oscillation between two wells, and enhancing the trapping in a well at large nonlinear interaction, which is similar to the dynamic change caused by the energy difference in the case of ideal condensate. That is to say, on the one hand, the nonlinear interaction can lead to the trap of condensate as well as the dynamic trap to happen in symmetric double-well potential. On the other hand, the nonlinearity can promote the tunneling of condensate, counteracting the effect of the asymmetry of potential. And, this counteracting effect is related to the difference in energy between asymmetric potential wells. To understand the underlying mechanism, the full dynamic behavior of two-mode model is illustrated and the dynamic transition can be seen clearly. Combining the results obtained with and without interaction, regarding nonlinear interaction as effective potential provides a clear way to explain dynamic transition of condensate in an asymmetric double-well potential. In addition, we also perform the numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and the results are consistent with the conclusions obtained by using the two-mode theory.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Cavity-mediated Triple-well

Lei Tan, Bin Wang, P. F. Barker +1 more

We investigate the energy structures and the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a triple-well potential coupled a high finesse optical cavity within a mean field approach. Due to the intrinsic atom-cavity field nonlinearity, several interesting phenomena arise which are the focuses of this work. For the energy structure, the bistability appears in the energy levels due to this atoms-cavity field nonlinearity, and the same phenomena can be found in the intra-cavity photons number. With an increase of the pump-cavity detunings, the higher and lower energy levels show a loop structure due to this cavity-mediated effects. In the dynamical process, an extensive numerical simulation of localization of the BECs for atoms initially trapped in one-, two-, and three-wells are performed for the symmetric and asymmetric cases in detail. It is shown that the the transition from oscillation to the localization can be modified by the cavity-mediated potential, which will enlarge the regions of oscillation. With the increasing of the atomic interaction, the oscillation is blocked and the localization emerges. The condensates atoms can be trapped either in one-, two-, or in three wells eventually where they are initially uploaded for certain parameters. In particular, we find that the transition from the oscillation to the localization is accompanied with some irregular regime where tunneling dynamics is dominated by chaos for this cavity-mediated system.
