Abstract

We have loaded a hollow core photonic crystal fibre (HC-PCF) with127I2and used it to record an absorption spectrum of iodine near 532 nm. We will measure the hyperfine structures of the P142 (37-0) transition of127I2in a HC-PCF and compare it to measurements made using a traditional127I2gas cell to determine how much spectral line broadening is induced in the HC-PCF as a result of gas particle collisions with the walls of the fibre. We aim to provide an estimate of the stability obtainable in a clock based on an127I2loaded HCPCF.

High-performance iodine fiber frequency standard

Anna Lurie, Fred N. Baynes, James D. Anstie +4 more

We have constructed a compact and robust optical frequency standard based around iodine vapor loaded into the core of a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF). A 532 nm laser was frequency locked to one hyperfine component of the R(56) 32-0 (127)I(2) transition using modulation transfer spectroscopy. The stabilized laser demonstrated a frequency stability of 2.3×10(-12) at 1 s, almost an order of magnitude better than previously reported for a laser stabilized to a gas-filled HC-PCF. This limit is set by the shot noise in the detection system. We present a discussion of the current limitations to the performance and a route to improve the performance by more than an order of magnitude.

Saturation Spectroscopy of Iodine in Hollow-core Optical Fibre

Anna Lurie, P. S. Light, James D. Anstie +4 more

We present high-resolution spectroscopy of Iodine vapour that is loaded and trapped within the core of a hollow-core photonic crystal fibre (HC-PCF). We compare the observed spectroscopic features to those seen in a conventional iodine cell and show that the saturation characteristics differ significantly. Despite the confined geometry it was still possible to obtain sub-Doppler features with a spectral width of ~6 MHz with very high contrast. We provide a simple theory which closely reproduces all the key observations of the experiment.

High resolution optical spectroscopy in hollow core fibre for use in atomic clocks

Christopher Perrella, P. S. Light, Fetah Benabid +2 more

We present high resolution measurements of Doppler free features within Rubidium (Rb) filled photonic crystal hollow core fibre (HC-PCF). Measurements within a Rb filled fibre with core diameter of 35μm show broadening of only 1 MHz associated with the transit time effect. This low level of additional broadening opens the door to compact frequency standards. We present initial spectroscopy of the narrow Rb 5S→5D two-photon transition within the fibre which we will use to create a compact frequency standard.

Hollow-core fibre frequency standard

Christopher Perrella, J. Anstie, P. S. Light +3 more

The development of high-quality and low-loss hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber (HC-PCF) offers interesting opportunities to develop robust and compact frequency standards. We are pursuing two different types of frequency standards based on HC-PCF: one based on saturation spec-troscopy of iodine [1], and a second based on two-photon spectroscopy of rubidium [2]. In this presentation we will present the progress with the rubidium-loaded fibre.

Optical nutation in acetylene-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Manuel Ocegueda, Serguei I. Stepanov, Nayeli Casillas +1 more

We report detailed experimental results on the optical nutation effect in acetylene-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs). This coherent quantum optical effect is manifested by the appearance of attenuated oscillations in the profiles of transmitted step-like coherent optical pulses. The experiments used 15 ns optical pulses with peak powers up to ∼4 W and centered at 1530.37 nm, which corresponds to the acetylene (12C2H2) vibration-rotation resonance absorption line P9. The all-fiber cell made from a HC-PCF with internal diameter ∼10.3 μm contained a gas pressure of about 0.12 Torr. The Maxwell-Bloch equations are used to analyze the influence of the homogeneous relaxation, the inhomogeneous Doppler broadening of the absorption line, and the random orientation of the acetylene molecules. By comparing the experimental results with numerical simulations, we obtain the longitudinal and the transverse relaxation times to be close to 10 ns and find that the transition dipole moment of the acetylene P9 absorption line is ∼1.36×10−32 Cm.
