Finite matrix model of quantum hall fluids on S2

Abstract

Based on Haldane's spherical geometrical formalism of the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids, the relation between the noncommutative geometry of S2 and the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids is exhibited. A finite matrix model on the two-sphere is explicitly constucted as an effective description of the fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent, and the complete sets of physical quantum states of this matrix model are determined. We also describe how the low-lying excitations in the model are constructed in terms of the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations. It is shown that there exists a Haldane hierarchical structure in the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states of the matrix model. These hierarchical fluid states are generated by the parent fluid state by condensing the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations level by level.

Quasiparticle excitations and hierarchies of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states in the matrix models

Yi-Xin Chen

We investigate the condensate mechanism of the low-lying excitations in the matrix models of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluids recently proposed by us. It is shown that there exist some hierarchies of 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states in the matrix models, and they are similar to the Haldane's hierarchy in the 2-dimensional quantum Hall fluids. However, these hierarchical fluid states appear consistently in our matrix models without any requirement of modifications of the matrix models.

Quantum Hall systems

Lucjan Jacak, Piotr Sitko, Konrad Wieczorek +1 more

Abstract The book presents the wide range of topics in two-dimensional physics of quantum Hall systems, especially fractional quantum Hall states. It starts with the fundamental problems of quantum statistics in two dimensions and the corresponding braid group formalism. The braid group formalism of anyons (previously known) is developed for composite fermions. The effective formalism used in many-body quantum Hall theories — the Chern–Simons theory is also presented. The Chern–Simons theory of anyons (particles obeying fractional statistics) and composite fermions (related to Hall systems) is given, in detail. Numerical studies, which play the important role in quantum Hall analyses, are presented for spherical systems (Haldane sphere). The composite fermion theory is tested in numerical studies. The concept of the hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations is introduced (in analogy to the Haldane hierarchy). The hierarchies of odd-denominator states and even-denominator states are presented. The BCS paired Hall state is also discussed. An introduction to multi-component quantum Hall systems and spin quantum Hall systems is sketched.

Quantum Hall states as matrix Chern-Simons theory

Alexios P. Polychronakos

We propose a finite Chern-Simons matrix model on the plane as an effective description of fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent. The quantization of the inverse filling fraction and of the quasiparticle number is shown to arise quantum mechanically and to agree with Laughlin theory. We also point out the effective equivalence of this model, and therefore of the quantum Hall system, with the Calogero model.

Graviton modes in fractional quantum hall liquids

Yuzhu Wang

The fractional quantum Hall fluid is a two-dimensional quantum fluid of electrons subject to a strong magnetic field at low temperatures.Neutral excitations in a fractional quantum Hall droplet define the incompressibility gap of the topological phase.Among these states, there are some specific modes in the long-wavelength limit that can be understood as "spin-2 gravitons".In this thesis, we will introduce a set of analytical results for the energy gap of the graviton modes for model Hamiltonians in the thermodynamic limit, which is governed by a well-defined and universal characteristic tensor. These results can help to construct model Hamiltonians for the graviton modes of different FQH phases and elucidate a hierarchical structure of conformal Hilbert spaces (null spaces of model Hamiltonians) containing the graviton modes and their corresponding ground states. An isomorphism can be defined for these conformal Hilbert spaces, and the mapping between them can be regarded as a more rigorous and general reinterpretation of the composite fermionization of FQH states, with naturally emergent composite fermions (each consisting of one electron and an even number of fluxes). The results from exact diagonalization will be shown, which confirm that for gapped phases, low-lying neutral excitations can undergo a phase transition even when the ground state remains in the same phase.Furthermore, the gaplessness of the Gaffnian state could be testified based on this formalism with further numerical experiments.Recently there has been numerical evidence implying the signature of multiple graviton modes. We will introduce the microscopic theory for the emergence of multiple gravitons in fractional quantum Hall droplets based on composite fermionization and the well-defined particle-hole conjugate within a specific conformal Hilbert space. This reveals the dynamical nature of this phenomenon and provides theoretical insights into the chirality and the "merging and splitting" behaviors of the graviton modes. The experimental relevance of multiple graviton modes will be discussed. The microscopic theory of gravitons can also provide valuable insights into the field-theoretical approaches.

Jastrow-Luttinger Fractional Liquids

K.-V. Pham, M. Gabay, Pascal Lederer

In this paper, we present a description of Haldane's Luttinger liquid which parallels Laughlin's theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) incompressible fluid, both exhibiting similar ground states as well as fractional excitations. These two non-Fermi liquids are instances of a generic structure for low-dimensional quantum liquids which we propose to dub Jastrow-Luttinger Fractional Liquids. An important feature of such liquids is the complete fractionalization of the parent particle. In particular, in both one and two dimensions spin-charge separation can be achieved and is indeed suggested to occur for unpolarized quantum Hall systems both at the edge and in the bulk.
