Is the composite fermion a dirac particle?

Dam Thanh Son

We propose a particle-hole symmetric theory of the Fermi-liquid ground state of a half-filled Landau level. This theory should be applicable for a Dirac fermion in the magnetic field at charge neutrality, as well as for the v = 1/2 quantum Hall ground state of nonrelativistic fermions in the limit of negligible inter-Landau-level mixing. We argue that when particle-hole symmetry is exact, the composite fermion is a massless Dirac fermion, characterized by a Berry phase of π around the Fermi circle. We write down a tentative effective field theory of such a fermion and discuss the discrete symmetries, in particular, C P. The Dirac composite fermions interact through a gauge, but non-Chern-Simons, interaction. The particle-hole conjugate pair of Jain-sequence states at filling factors n/(2n + 1) and (n + 1)/(2n + 1), which in the conventional composite fermion picture corresponds to integer quantum Hall states with different filling factors, n and n + 1, is now mapped to the same half-integer filling factor n + 1/2 of the Dirac composite fermion. The Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states are interpreted as d -wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer paired states of the Dirac fermion with orbital angular momentum of opposite signs, while s -wave pairing would give rise to a particle-hole symmetric non-Abelian gapped phase. When particle-hole symmetry is not exact, the Dirac fermion has a C P -breaking mass. The conventional fermionic Chern-Simons theory is shown to emerge in the nonrelativistic limit of the massive theory.

Factorization approach to generalized Dirac oscillators

Jafar Sadeghi, Seithuti Philemon Moshokoa, M. Rostami +1 more

We study generalized Dirac oscillators with complex interactions in (1+1) dimensions. It is shown that for the choice of interactions considered here, the Dirac Hamiltonians are  pseudo Hermitian with respect to certain metric operators  . Exact solutions of the generalized Dirac Oscillator for some choices of the interactions have also been obtained. It is also shown that generalized Dirac oscillators can be identified with Anti Jaynes Cummings type model and by spin flip it can also be identified with Jaynes Cummings type model.

Asymptotic Solution of the Dirac Equation

Sol I. Rubinow, Joseph Bishop Keller

The WKB method is applied to solve the Dirac equation and the modified Dirac equation appropriate to a spin-\textonehalf{} particle with an anomalous magnetic moment. The solution consists of a phase factor multiplied by a spinor amplitude which is a power series in Planck's constant. The phase is a solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of relativistic mechanics for a spinless particle without electric or magnetic moments. Each term in the spinor amplitude satisfies an ordinary differential equation along the relativistic trajectories. The equation for the leading amplitude yields an equation for the polarization four-vector which is identical with that derived classically by Bargmann, Michel, and Telegdi. It also yields the law of conservation of probability in a tube of trajectories. In addition, it gives rise to an equation for a supplementary phase factor. By using the classical Hamilton-Jacobi function, the law of probability conservation, the polarization four-vector and the supplementary phase factor, the leading term in the solution of the Dirac or modified Dirac equation can be constructed. This solution should be useful when the wavelength of the particle is small compared to the characteristic distance associated with the electromagnetic potential through which the particle moves. When applied to the bound states of a particle without an anomalous moment in a spherically symmetric electrostatic potential, it yields the same results as are usually obtained by separation of variables and use of the ordinary WKB method. The advantage of the present method is that it applies equally well to nonseparable problems.
