Resonant multiphoton ionization induced by pulsed excitation

Michele Crance, S. Feneuille

Published Oct 1, 1977• 40 citations
Publisher

Abstract

The object of this paper is to study the influence of the characteristics of the excitation pulse on resonant multiphoton ionization. A classical description of the field is introduced in the exactly solvable model initially developed by Beers and Armstrong. A detailed solution is given for square pulses. The case corresponding to a highly excited resonant level is particularly studied both analytically for square pulses and numerically for different amplitude-varying shapes.

Influence of excitation pulse characteristics on resonant multiphoton ionization

Michele Crance, S. Feneuille

The object of this letter is to show that, in some limiting cases, a simple model using an atomic density operator and a classical description of the field allows one to study the influence of the characteristics (duration and shape) of the excitation pulse on resonant multiphoton ionization.

Doubly resonant multiphoton ionization

Michele Crance

We investigate theoretically a particular case of doubly resonant multiphoton ionization. More precisely, we consider two levels quasi-resonant with two successive harmonics of the field frequency. The method used is based on the effective operator formalism first introduced for this problem by Armstrong, Beers and Feneuille. The main result is to show the possibility of observing large interference effects on the width of the resonances. Moreover this treatment allows us to make more precise the connection between effective operator formalism and standard perturbation theory.

Short-time behavior in multiphoton ionization

Constantine E. Theodosiou, Lloyd Armstrong, Michele Crance +1 more

The short-time behavior of atomic multiphoton-ionization profiles is investigated using simplified models of the field and the atom. The importance of including many levels in the model atom, of spontaneous emission, and of pulse shape are studied in detail. It is shown that the first two of these have little influence on the qualitative behavior of the short-time behavior of the resonance profile, but that the third, the pulse shape, is critical in determining the time evolution of the resonance profile.

Dynamics of Short-Pulse Multiphoton Ionization

George N. Gibson, Richard R. Freeman, Thomas J. Mcilrath

We investigate the relative importance of resonant enhancement and real population transfer in short-pulse multiphoton ionization. Total ionization and excited state population after the laser pulse are calculated numerically by integrating the time dependent Schödinger for a two level atom in a short-pulse high-intensity laser field.

Resonant pulse excitation leading to ionization

Jay R. Ackerhalt

Laser excitation of a two-level atom is analytically studied for arbitrary pulse shape, area, and energy. The ionization mechanism is modeled as a homogeneous width $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ of the atomic excited state. A transformation of the optical Bloch equations allows the dynamics to be completely described by a single equation for the area of the pulse at time $t$, $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$. Analytic solutions for the total bound population for a wide variety of pulse shapes can be found in two regions: $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)\ensuremath{\approx}sin\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$ and $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)>\ensuremath{\gamma}$, where $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)$ is the resonance Rabi frequency. The generalization of the two-level atom results to the $N$-level atom is discussed.

Multiphoton ionization under sequential excitation by coherent pulses

Jean‐Claude Diels, James P. Stone

The use of pulse sequences offers a solution to the conflicting requirements of spectral selectivity and high peak intensities needed to study multiphoton processes. In addition, it is shown that random---rather than regular---pulse sequences can provide unique information on the influence of coherence on a resonant multiphoton process, because the coherence can be adjusted independently of the resonance condition.
